Spoilers Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

I got it all figured out. I's all clever misdirection. The panel starts off with a bunch of apparent nobodies droning on about where they thing the future of the franchise is headed, and then about halfway through, Paul McGann suddenly walks up on stage and announced his return to Doctor Who in four specials that will air throughout 2026, in which though he plays the Eighth Doctor these specials will also somehow set up for the new Doctor officially taking over the role in 2027.

The sad part is, this post is probably more interesting than the panel itself actually will be.
If only. :sigh:

Speaking of people no one's heard of, was there even any explanation for that random day during the S2 broadcast when a bunch of *shudder* influencers dropped photos of themselves on the TARDIS set?
I think this kind of thing is just a standard part of promotion for productions like this, I follow Disney on IG and did a big Elio event for a bunch of influencers at Pixar.

So apparently one of the reasons Ncuti left is because of the physical toll of the role and apparently he's old now

Doesn't rule out returning one day

Metro reports the same story, but refers to him as implying he’s coming back. It also refers to fan reaction to Belinda’s character assassination.

He mentions that in the after episode material

I'm more and more convinced there's a story beyond his departure. Not a full-on Eccleston situation but something happened.

He went from talking about shooting S3 this year to them having to reshoot the ending to get rid of him in the span of a few weeks.

I mean maybe Millie wasn't the problem?

I do wonder if RTD wishes he'd just gone with Toby Stephens (or whoever it actually was)

if it's causing issues with his knees then it's probably a good thing.

He might be younger than the other actors to take on the role and much fitter but he's still got a long a career ahead but it he starts to have serious knee problems it's going to bring things to a screeching halt.

I'm remembering the interview with Peter Capaldi where he theorized that he, Matt Smith, and David Tennant had all blown out their knees because of excessively doing the run/stop/pivot-dramatically move.
Not to mention, Tennant's back was wrenched pretty badly filming "The Next Doctor." And Matt Smith's knees were already shot from his earlier football injury.

Less running? Less physical stuff? More stuntmen? The physical toll filming Doctor Who takes appears to be a real problem. There has to be a solution.

I'm not taking the 'I was worn out by the role' story seriously for a moment, and I'm assuming it's something Gatwa agreed to say to keep the behind-the-scenes goings on a secret.

It's probably nothing sinister going on and the BBC/Bad Wolf just want to keep their business dealings private. The most plausible answer seems to be that Disney were dragging their feet on whether they wanted to pay for a third season, and he couldn't stick around and lose out on jobs.

Seems like he very much was commited to a third series and Disney was prolonging things to a breaking point for Ncuti. At that point, RTD may have felt slighted, but obviously overcame soon enough to write the rewrite we witnessed in The Reality War. That also hints, to me, that the long hiatus rumors are much, much more serious and have been for a time longer than just these last few months.

Basically, we're in for the longest haul since the 1996-2005 one. I only hope its short, like a couple of years or so.

I think that the BBC could just go it alone with a reduced budget, smaller episode count and an uptick in quarry usage.

Give it a year, and we might be singing a different tune.

I'll take a gamble and say we'll hear something about specials being made for 2027, with or without a streaming partner.
