Running the ship in 'grey mode'?

Hey guys, I remember an episode where Chakotay says "the ship is running in grey mode" to mean that the ship was running on low power. Does anyone know if this is an official term in Starfleet or not?

I was just curious where it came from.

Reduced Power Mode comes from the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, and was never mentioned on screen.

Grey mode appears to be the same thing.

Did a Google search for "grey mode." The very first result was the Memory Alpha entry for Gray Mode. Fun fact, the fourth result is this very thread.
