Runaways (Marvel) to start shooting in January

Weird that they specify Alex's race in the casting call but not Nico's.

Anyway, like I've said before, I'd be interested to know what their plans are for the development of this franchise long-term. With live actors, most of them will be hitting their twenties by the time of a potential sequel (though it would really be the most trouble with Molly's, whose whole schtick is being a cute preteen).

^^^
What if
A) The can't find a talented enough age specific actress for the part.
B) They just cast an Asian American and she isn't good and drags the film down.

I'm all for them or any studio trying to stay true to the source. Marvel seems very keen and aware of that, hence their casting on their properties to date.

Too much was made over Airbender and it'd be a shame for this vocal minority to again keep their panties in a wad if, IF, a suitable actress can't be found to honor the characters 4-color counterpart.

There are more than enough Japanese people to supply an appropriate actress; it has never been a question of there not being an appropriate person if you're willing to look, and always that the movie industry has often not been interested in looking because of other factors.

Clint Eastwood made a movie about the Hmong, a much, much smaller Asian ethnic group, and managed to find all the people he needed.

Great Eastwood found what he was looking for.
Could Marvel fill the role, sure. Would she be the right fit or just filling a hole.

Time is a factor, its why casting sheets are out there. They start filming in 3-4 months. If in that time they haven't found the right Asian-American actress its not for lack of trying within the time frame they have. Therefore I'd hate to see people get all pissy, again, if another ethnicity fills the role.

There are a LOT of actors, actresses in both New York and LA. 3 to 4 months is a LONG time in the business. There are a LOT of Asian and Asian American actors looking for work--and it's not because they aren't talented, it's because there aren't enough roles.

If they can't find an Asian American actress they have their heads up their asses.

Edited to add:

Why should Asian American roles be replaceable? Why is ANY ethnicity ok to fill in for an Asian American character? That's ridiculous.

I hope Marvel takes especially good care of this property. I loved BKV's work on the comic series. Which reminds me that I need to get around to buying some collections... I stopped reading the series shortly after Joss Whedon took over -- the first time he's ever disappointed me.

[...] Kirsten Stewart has now been cast as Gert.
Now I'm going to have nightmares. Thanks oh so much for that.

Wish they'd do this as a TV series.
That would totally rock.

They've pushed back the shooting date to March but the real news is the project is now not being titled Runaways but instead....Small Faces. :wtf:
"Marvel's big-screen adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn's "The Runaways" comic has apparently pushed back its production start date to March and the title has been changed to "Small Faces"..."

This is very out of character for Marvel. To not keep faithful with the name of one of their properties? I'm having trouble with the Twitter link so maybe there are some details there that explain the name change.

Sounds more liike a code name for casting and location scouting. In fact i
would bet that is exactly what it is.

Some of the commenters suggest that she might play the female form of Xavin, which would make sense, though I'm not sure if they'd introduce him/her in the first film.

What if she's playing a younger version of Alex Wilder's mom, in a flashback? There was an issue explaining the origins of the Pride, conceivably that might also be adapted in the film.

-shrug-
