Runaways (Marvel) to start shooting in January

Another Marvel movie adaptation. This one should be cheaper to cast than Avengers at least. They should save the money for any big name talent for the roles of the kids parents.

I'm glad Brian K. Vaughn is writing the script as no other writer really wrote the kids as entertainingly as him. Of course, as the series creator that's hardly a shock. However, Whedon's issues gave me an all-time favorite Kingpin scene (mmmm, chocolate) and an all-time favorite Punisher scene (Still... standing...). :guffaw:

I wonder if there will be any effort to tie this into the larger Marvel movie-verse? Captain America and Iron Man had a brief appearance in Vaughn's run.

Been hearing about this one for a while, but it's good that a date has been set--and wonderful that it's Vaughn who is writing it. It was a great series at its inception, but the later writers seemed to forget that it was a series about kids, not for kids (well, they're mostly teens, but you know what I'm saying).

As for connecting it to the rest of the Movie-verse? Some throw-away references would be welcome, but I'd go no further than that. Think of what this movie will contain: aliens, sorcerers, time-travellers, mutants (actually--can they use mutants or will they have to rewrite that since FOX has mutants?), dinosaurs, primordial deities... That's a lot of crazy stuff to throw into the more grounded movieverse all at once. Put in easter eggs for the fans, but wait until the franchise expands (with entries like Doc Strange) before more overt tie-ins.

I've not read the comic but look forward to the movie from what I've heard of the series.
I reckon they will try and tie it in, in some way thought, after all, Marvel seems to have a bit of a thing for continuity atm

Maybe if they throw in a few easter eggs like the Cap A shield in Iron Man 1, that should satisfy people.

This could be difficult to pull off, as although it only takes place in the margins of the Marvel universe, certain plot points are heavily dependant on it (e.g. Molly and her parents being mutants).

They should definitely base the film on the first "season", which is still the best.

I got the impression somebody else was tackling the script now.

Huh, with the biopic of the band out this made me think "Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as Marvel Superheroines"...

Huh. The article says Vaughn is writing the screenplay with Drew Pearce (No Heroics) writing the script. That didn't register the first time I read the article. Could someone explain the difference between screenplay and script? I always thaought that they were two different words with the same meaning.

Has Feige trashed Norton with this announcement too? :)
No joke, he was not kind to Norton and Norton had(from what I saw) a classy response about it having been an honor etc, etc.

As for the Runaways movie its a project I know little about as far as source goes. I've only skimmed the book on the racks. I'll see it based on the trailers and like it as it is or not. No 'how is it as an adaptation' for me on this one.

Depending on whether they want sequels or not, this seems like the sort of property that would work better animated; otherwise the cast ages out of teen-hood fairly quickly, which isn't an issue in the comics.

I've always thought this could be a viable property when speculative discussions re:Marvel have come up.

If nothing else, at least it's not a property that's been done to death or has an air of over-familiarization about it.

I've only read the first series or so, has it changed much since then?

I would say so. There's been a few cast changes, some of which have now gone back to their previous state; they keep having to change hideout; and, as I said, the tonality of the series changed at the end, becoming rather more childish.

hmm... not sure about this one... i think the series started off strong, but now it's lost it's charm. i liked that they were runaway teenagers escaping their parents. but once it became "they are teenage super heroes called "The Runaways" " it kinda lost something. it's just the young west coast avengers.

still, Molly is awesome and i'd love to see her kick some ass on the big screen.

Well, the nice thing about a movie is it will start with them being runaway teenagers escaping their parents. :)

Well, at least that confirms that the first run will form the basis of the film. Not that that was much in doubt, but it definitely is the right way to go.
