That wouldn't surprise me since Zac Effron's name was being bandied about by speculators. This isn't confirmed yet folks, it's still a rumor but Josh did confirm his audition and the final decision is expected pretty soon. There's been so many names and additions and reductions and near locks that I'll wait until we get an absolute decision or a press conference.

I'm personally not even that enthused or interested in this reboot. I've mentioned my reasons in previous threads so I'll not repeat them here. I think they should have given the franchise a rest after the debacle with "Spider-Man 4".

Columbia Tri-Star is in a slightly different position to MGM, I suppose, but they don't seem to have a lot of franchise "muscle" so to speak.

All of the major studios need big franchises to "milk", for want of a better term. Otherwise, they won't have much money to invest in new ideas that can be turned in to replacement franchises.

Sony's big weapon is Spider-Man, which has been hugely successful for them. Not only in terms of box office receipts and DVD rentals/sales but things like merchandise and video games too.
