Rumor: TNG to continue animated...

TNG as animated show...

There are whispers...in the dark.....on the internet...that TNG is to be continued as an animated show and that Patrick Stewart will sign on to reprise his role shortly.

I would actually love that! As long the animation style fits. I DO NOT want to see:

- Star Wars Clone Wars Style CGI...(which IMHO is pretty ugly)
- Funimation Style
- Any of those weird ugly Disney TV animation styles (Kim Possible..etc.)
- Anime (I love Anime...but I just think that style wouldn´t be appopriate)

Your thoughts?
Why are all the Disney styles weird/ugly? They actually are pretty varied. I'm not saying I would like them used as a TNG show, but that is kind of like saying all anime is weird/ugly when the styles can very different.

That's what rumours are. Is there really some other type of rumour called a credible rumour?
Rumour has it there is. :shifty:

I don't know. The internet has a bad habit of confusing speculation, rumors, and facts. Some random fan speculating on a blog is not a rumor; it's just an educated guess. Other sites "reporting" on a fan theory are not rumors. That's just speculation and wishful thinking.

A reliable news source citing unconfirmed reports from people working on the project are "rumors" until they are official confirmed, at which point they become actual "news."

Where are these "rumors" coming from? Who is spreading them? I'm not seeing anything on any of the major entertainment news sites. "Whispers on the internet" could mean anything.

That being said, STAR TREK is overdue for a new animated series of some kind, in order to attract younger viewers. Not convinced, however, that a TNG cartoon series would attract today's teens and kids.

I'd actually dig this. I think most of the cast could convincingly reprise their roles as voices while animation obviously negates any need for them to physically resemble themselves as they once were. The show could be set at almost any time, perhaps as 'missing adventures' from during the actual seven year TV run complete with the return of 1701-D for ultimate nostalgia, or perhaps interquels between any of the movies. The most obvious path are post movie adventures but I merely make the case that it isn't by any stretch the only place an animated version could go... part of the unique charm of the TOS animated series was the choice the producers made not to update but rather to ground the show in the exact aesthetics of it's live action forebear, unencumbered by aging actors or the need to rebuild costly sets or models. Any potential TNG animated could likewise be an exercise in brushing away the bad blood the TNG movies created and, in some way, recapturing the purity of the TV series by returning to it as a setting. ;)

I just don't get the appeal of animated versions of live action series, and I say this as a former avid comic collector. I tried watching a few of the Star Wars series, as well as Tron: Uprising, because I really enjoyed Tron: Legacy. But they did nothing for me. It wasn't interesting. It wasn't engaging. The animation was off-putting.

I said it earlier upthread, but I'll repeat: I hope they never go this route with Trek. The only animated version I enjoyed was Family Guy's spoofs, and that was precisely because it wasn't supposed to be taken seriously.

There are prevalent styles though, which I assume is what s/he means.

As for Disney, they seem to really cut corners nowadays with their animation. Hardly anything even appears to be shaded.

Perhaps so. I'm not as familiar with the current shows as some of the ones a little bit older.

It's not that I think you can't tell good drama with animation. I just think that in the US, animation has the stereotype of being 'for kids', so animation would lead to more kiddy stories. Also I think Star Trek needs the kind of nuanced facial expressions that most animators don't try for.

I think this rumor stems from the mixing of two separate pieces of information we got when they announced the news that Alex Kurtzman was considering doing a continuation of TNG (or at least to have Patrick Stewart reprise his role as Picard) and also that he was considering some sort of trek cartoon. Naturally some people are gong to automatically assume perhaps due to wishful thinking that this means it's going to be an animated cartoon of TNG. Even though as far as I've heard there hasn't been any official source stating this, so I'm very skeptical about this at least for now.

I honestly would have some mixed feelings about a TNG cartoon. I mean would they have some greater story telling purpose for doing so other then to capitalize on the nostalgia of 90s kids? Would this cartoon be set on the Enterprise D, would it just be more episodes of TNG? I mean if well written I can see that being popular with a very niche group of fans but I'm not sure it would attacked newer audience. One major plus to this, would be that Brent Spiner and John de Lancie could resume their roles as Data and Q, without feeling ridiculous about playing essentially immortal characters whilst being well passed their primes. But again I doubt very much this is happening.

I would love to see an animated trek, TNG or otherwise. There's so much potential to do interesting aliens and worlds that might not be possible on live action due to the things such as the limitations heavy makeup can put on acting ability.

For years I had thought they should do the second five year mission from the TMP era as an animated show. Then the original cast started dying off...
So obviously, I’m all for this.

Animated TNG? Why not?
I'm not sure I would like it, but...
No one will force anyone watch it but who knows how good it could be before it's done.
So, lets make animated TNG and everyone can decide whether they want to be interested in it.

If they did an animated TNG it would be nice if the could have episodes that featured DS9 and Voyager crossovers.

But I hope they pick a better looking animation style than what the majority of modern cartoon (Even the Ducktales reboot) use, which is boring and very flat.

I think this thread title needs fixing. There are absolutely no credible rumors about TNG going animated. These "reports" are nothing but blind conjecture.

As today's news from Las Vegas suggests, this "rumour" was nothing more that wishful thinking on some fan's part. Can we lock the thread now?

It should be done in claymation, thusly:

Lol that genuinely made me laugh. Kudos to whoever made that, pretty accurate voices. Love how Riker (or Diaper in this case) shouts "SHIELDS UP" or "RED ALERT" after everything.

I don't think for a moment that this is anything more than wild speculation... BUT

IF the show was pitched at the same level as TNG
AND they got good writers
AND the original cast
AND the animation style wasn't too childish..

Then and ONLY THEN I'd be up for it.
