RUMOR: Chris Pine in negotiations for Kirk

The guy looks and sounds fine. Hope they can sign him.

"Star Trek" casting news was never this hot in the trade press back in the day, BTW.

JJ Abrams' involvement sure doesn't hurt.

I can see him as a generic redshirt... but as Kirk... there's not a hint of "Shatner" in him that I can see. So there's no Kirk in him that I can see, either (though he DOES look the part much more than the "New Voyages" guy does!)

He doesn't have to BE Shatner. If he tried to mimic Shatner, he'd be a terrible actor...which is a major failing of the fan films. He just needs to bring his interpretation to a legendary fictional character. I want to recognize Kirk's opinions, attitude and actions, not Shatner as Kirk.

Isn't the whole point of a recast to continue with a different actor playing the part? They're not looking for someone to play Shatner, they're looking for someone to play James Kirk. They're no more one and same than Connery and Bond.

I don't really know this "Pine" guy. Has he been in a lot of movies?

And if we want to cast somebody as "Shatner" I hear the dude from Boston Legal is really good at that. Course, he may not want anything to do with the geekfest of a Trek movie.

It's not really the same thing though. I mean, no-one is suggesting that Daniel Craig's character in Casino Royale is the same one that Connery played in Dr No.

OTOH, this Kirk is meant to be the same guy who appeared in Where No Man Has Gone Before, TMP, TSFS etc. Just as Zachary Quinto is meant to be the same Spock as Leonard Nimoy - and looks the spitting image of him.

Ultimately, I suppose it's more important that the actor conveys the character and spirit of Shatner's Kirk than he looks like his clone. But if they opted for someone who looked absolutely nothing like him, I think many fans would be disappointed and somewhat puzzled.

No shit? Which one? The guy who plays Jerry Espenson or James Spader? ;)

Sure they are - they're both this "James Bond" guy.

It's true that young Bond lives in the 21st century now, when he used to live in 1961 - but Young Kirk lives in the 23rd century circa 2007 now, as opposed to the 23rd century circa 1965. ;)

I don't see anything in him that screams "not Kirk," but I don't particularly see anything that says he'd be great, either. At least his voice isn't squeaky like some of these teen dreamboats passing for actors.

And Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense! Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this movie? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this movie! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a fan who makes random jokes in a Star Trek forum, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense!
