Don't worry, there are other ways to watch a tv show than on tv.

What I don't understand is why so little effort has been put into dubbing Star Trek, while other shows are pretty well done. DS9 and Voyager were completely unwatchable in their dubbed versions ... the translation, the voices ... it's all on an almost amateurish level.
 
Well dubbing is a no-go for me since the late 90ies. During the 80ies and 90ies Germans had to wait months or even years to watch a new tv show coming from over the big pond. Without the Internet there was almost no chance to get spoilered. So the dubbing studios had sufficient time to get a really good dub out of every movie or tv show.

When Internet leaks started to put pressure on the big studios, the time between the U.S and german premiere gradually decreased. A good example for comparison are the Indiana Jones movies. The german dub of the first 3 movies was almost flawless. Actually i prefer the german dubbed version over the original one. About 4 months lay between the U.S. and german release dates:

The fourth movie got released simultaneously in almost all box office relevant countries. The dub is unbearable. Its like you can actually hear the time pressure on the voice actors.

I remember that VOY was the first tv show i regularly pirated over the Internet because i was so pissed off about the german dub (and the waiting time).

There are worse dubs then any Star Trek Dub. The Doctor Who Dubs are...bearable...but not really much more then that.
 
One more thing about Star Trek dubbing and specifically TNG.
Tng was the last Trek show where the dubbing industry did not go out of it's way to get voice actors who sound as close as possible to the original actor's voices.
They went for voices with their own distinctiveness.
Some of them sound drastically different becoming their own version of the character.
Some of their voices were changed during the run of season 4 and some were changed for the movies.
Data was the only one who stayed the same.
He sounds totally different than Spiner but the guy had acting range. Something that apparently only matters for the most prominent blockbuster features now unfortunately

That makes sense, I hadn't considered accent. So, basically Schwarzenegger dubbing in German would be a David Prowse as "Darth Farmer" situation.
 
It's possible that Spiner would be appearing as the traditional crossover character. It could just be a guest star role for the premiere episode.
 
Spiner is to old to play data, unless artificial skin hundreds of years from now ages. I would guess they'd take the aging out of artificial skin by then.

It could be an intentional thing by Data to want to appear to age.

Regarding the dubbing, wow I'm pretty surprised that dubs is so popular in Germany. I guess it's not something I ever thought much about but I figured people in non-English speaking countries would prefer subs (or just English audio if fluent in English), and I'm surprised dubbing is a thing. I just can't watch anything dubbed in English, it's so cheesy even if it's done by great actors. I do watch anime dubs though since they don't try to match the mouths perfectly to voices anyway.

I don't buy that, but it doesn't matter what I think, whatever they want to do for the sake of the story line will be done anyway.

I can't see how it wouldn't be believable. I doubt he comes back as Data though.

Funny that you ask. Star Trek 3 The Search for Spock is an example of where they actually did that.
Because of that a few scenes didn't make much sense.
But I think the original Klingon was restored for DVD or bluray
 
Apologies if it was said and I missed it, but is there some reason we are not considering him possibly playing Soong?
 
I sincerely hope he isn't playing Soong. Enough of him from TNG and ENT.

Maybe someone completely unrelated, like a Starfleet Admiral? It may be something that takes you out of the universe, but I would rather have him as someone in a cameo, someone new.

I believe the "Darth Farmer" reference has to do with how David Prowse (from Bristol, England) spoke Vader's lines of Dialog when his scenes were shot, thinking that his voice would actually be used in the final version of the movie. It wasn't.
