Rumor: Batman: The Animated Series revival coming to HBO Max

Not according to Kevin Smith. Marc Bernardin reported the rumor, and Kev only said he heard this, too, from people he trusts. This happens occasionally, Smith commenting on rumors he heard, and the entertainment news cycle running with that as some kind of confirmation.

Now, considering what Kev actually said, it's very likely that this is considered at Warner Media. It does not mean it will happen, and considering this is animation with certain expectations of quality to it, it won't happen soon.

Yeah, even if they did actually hear about it, that doesn't mean it'll actually happen.

Yeah, I wouldn't read too much into this rumour specifically, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the DCAU revived either. Every streaming service is digging into the nostalgia hard to get subscribers and reviving the DCAU is certainly one effective way to do that. Maybe we'll finally get that Near Apocalypse of 2009 story we've always wanted.

I'd love to see more episodes of a I'd love to see more episodes a Batman the Animated Series oh, it's not like the show ended because they ran out of ideas or had nowhere left to go. As long as it's actually a Batman the Animated Series Sequel, and has no connection to Batman Beyond. completely ignore Batman Beyond and ignore Return of the Joker(so we can have older Tim Drake as Robin or Red Robin), and just do what they want.

I'd love to see the Kevin Conroy Batman go up against some of the Batman villains he never fought, and maybe use villains like the Riddler and Bane more.

also, I'd hope a sequel series uses a version of the original art style, and not the lamer version that got changed to match Superman. Bare minimum, no one wants to see that horrendous Joker design ever again, even Justice League change the design to be closer to the original Batman animated series look

The Scarecrow had a killer redesign.

The Scarecrow was the only improvement in my opinion, but since the Scarecrow was really the only outright bad Batman: TAS design (again, in my opinion), it wasn't going to be hard to improve it.

Apparently even people that worked on the show (outside of Timm) hated the Joker redesign (I think I listened to a commentary where some of the people from the show talked about it), which is why he got a different design that was closer to his old one for Justice League and Return of the Joker, but even ignoring him the redesigns for Riddler, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze and especially Catwoman redesigns were awful. Catwoman looking like she was barely Batgirl or Nightwing's age while also copying the Batman Returns Catwoman design for no reason was just bizarre, and Mr. Freeze and his spider head was absolutely moronic. The weird removal of color from so many of the designs was just head scratching as well.

The New Batman Adventures had some good episodes, but the designs had issues.

I think the show has more than run its course, especially, and unpleasantly, with TNBA suggesting and then Batman Beyond showing that Batman would become estranged from all his proteges and The Killing Joke film being a kind-of reunion/new finale that I mostly liked, though Conroy and Hamill were notably lesser, but a lot of people didn't, and then Batman and Harley Quinn another (divisive) reunion/conclusion (with the follow-ups, even as early as RotJ, having a very different tone) along with Harley Quinn a particularly notable new animated take.

There's potential in exploring the post-JLU years before Bruce hangs up the cowl in Batman Beyond.

All of this. Gods, I really loathed the redesigns.

As for a potential revival: Only if Timm and Dini are involved and uses the original animation style. I don't mind recasting (some of them are obviously unavoidable and others are retired like Hamil) but without those core elements, it's not really Batman: The Animated Series. Just make another animated Batman of some other formula and format.

I also noticed that once the show switched over to the new designs that we rarely saw Mad Hatter and Riddler outside of "Knight Time". It's like they were sidelined.

Riddler in particular lost his TAS suit attire for a more 60's version costume

It just makes me think the voice actors just recorded one or two lines and some grunts and that was it

I just noticed that "Knight Time" aired on October 3rd 1998. Roddy Mcdowell(Mad Hatter) died 7 days later. Perhaps for Mad Hatter focused episodes there wasn't enough time to write one

I agree. This could make the series a little bit darker for the older fans who grew up with this.
Seeing Bruce get old, relying on the robotic suit, pushing away people around him, getting to see the near apocalypse of '09. Lots of potential.
