Rugby Union World Cup 2011

Well well well, what a turnaround from last weekend, New Zealand showed up with the All Blacks and Australia showed up with...Quade Cooper?! How the hell is that asshole still on your team? The only reason I can see for Deans to play Cooper AGAIN after his poor showing pretty much all tournament instead of someone who can play worth a damn like Barnes must be sentimentality. The Wallabies played exactly like last weekend against the Springboks and got punished for it, the All Blacks have played their best game of the tournament - bar maybe against France in the pool play - and got the results on the scoreboard.

I think South Africa's loss last week has now been avenged, as well as any loss that the All Blacks have suffered in World Cups since 1995. If France win in the final it will be a fucking miracle, after the way they played against Wales, but it will be okay if they do, they deserve a win after all these World Cups even more than we do. Yeah I know, its very un-Kiwi of me, but hey.

Oh and Australia? Say hello to the Welsh for me as they kick your ass back across the Tasman next Friday for the bronze final :guffaw:

Watched the match today: a well-deserved victory for NZ. I was surprised how Weepu screw up half of the kicks, tho. For someone who didn't have a side in the match, it was a very entertaining game.

Now I have to root for France, both for Northern Hemisphere solidarity and because I like to support the underdog. I know I am in for a disappointment, but what the hell. :D

^ BOOO! But, both Australia and New Zealand scored drop goals in an all southern hemisphere match, surely that must count towards some northern hemisphere brownie points, maybe?

Shit, just found out Warburton is out for the next three weeks thanks to an IRB ruling. I forget, does that mean Wales are forced to start a man short on Friday or are they allowed to replace him at least?

The red card only counts for that match, so Wales will have 15 men on the field. Warburton just won't be part of the 22 squad.

Oh, and go France!

True, Wales will have another uphill battle without their captain I guess, the best of luck to them, any team that is looking to kick Wallaby ass will have my backing! Please have Cooper starting at flyhalf again on friday, it will be appreciated by all Welsh and New Zealand supporters!

Deans has put a lot behind Cooper as the starting fly half, so I can't see it changing for the third place match, even though I'd like to see the change.

Feel sorry for Wales to lose by 1 point, warburton's red card was the correct decision I feel. Any dangerous tackle should be, having been on the end of a dangerous i perfectly understand the red card. The irb are taken a zero tolerance and hve been since 2007 it's just refs don't take notice. See link below for the law on this, the decision to red card is correct especially has warburton has just been given a 3 week ban too.http://www.orrs.ca/forms/090610%20Dangerous%20Tackle.pdf

I'd like the French to win as new Zealand haven't really had what could be considered hard games until the Aussies, however I can't see the French winning though.

And the referees for next weekend's matches have been announced, Craig Joubert will handle the final, while Wayne Barnes gets the bronze final. So 'yay!' to the first bit and 'meh' for the second bit. It could be worse, like if it were the other way around, but still...

And now for something completely different, Chopper Read's thoughts on the Rugby World Cup:

Glad to see that Sharpe will get his 100th cap on Friday. He did the hard yards over some lean times.

Not upset to hear O'Neill will be leaving as CEO of the ARU in 2013 when his contract is up, in fact I'd have been even happier if it was earlier. What I'll remember him most for is hampering the growth and depth of rugby and the Wallabies in killing off the APC and pulling Aust-A from the PNC, essentially killing the program.

Deans' treatment of Sharpe has been disgraceful, really - taking his "out with the old" policy a step too far and removing someone who's still a better player than any of those who've been chosen ahead of him (and Horwill is very much included in that assessment). Finally Barnes is at 12, where he should have been once his fitness was established. Hopefully our blokes can lift for a game that's little more than a cynical money-grubbing exercise for the worthless IRB. Wales certainly won't be lacking motivation.

O'Neill did some good during his first stint but has done little more than whinge this time around. I won't envy whoever replaces him, though; rugby will be under more pressure than ever in this country after our dismal Cup campaign.

Not a game that reached any great heights, but a pleasant enough result for us in what really is a meaningless money-grubbing fixture. We looked about fifty times better with Barnes at 10 - I truly don't wish any ill on Cooper, but this Cup proved he's overrated, overpraised, overhyped, and (basically) nowhere near as good as he (and his assortment of media champions) think he is. A shame Sharpe was injured in his 100th game, but he did manage to make clear what we've been missing without him. I'm not sure that any of the "reserve" (for lack of a better word) players really grabbed their opportunity, but one hopes there will be some changes for the short tour next month other than the obvious injury- and departure-enforced ones.

I just read somewhere that Wales will drop to 8th in the rankings after this. How completely and utterly stupid. They're going to be a hell of a team in a few years with a bit more experience under their collective belts; I'm already looking forward to seeing them here next year.

Don't really give a damn about the final now, but whatever happens I'm quite sure the All Blacks will be far more gracious and far less pathetically boorish than some of their supporters.

So, the French team chose to play in white, to let the AB play in black at home. Blood is not easy to wash on a white jersey :(

I spent too much of my time yelling at the refs during the second half. Wales got a try off a forward pass and one thanks to the touch judge not noticing when someone was in touch with the ball. However, Wales did not deserve to win (probably their weakest performance of the tournament) so the result was fair. Australia looked better for the most part despite losing a fullback and fly half within the first 20 mins of the game and within 10 mins of each other.

ACC bombing a try (a tad unfair as it was a great cover tackle) is a good illustration of his year. Over at RH one of the guys said he's been consistent and that's true. The problem is his level has been average from pretty much the start of the Super season. He probably had one of his better games without really doing anything great. Horne looked far more dynamic off the bench for a player who has had so much time off.

Out of the entire back line over the whole world cup O'Connor can hold his head high as he has looked the best of them, though tonight he let too many balls go over his head. Barnes did well with limited time and so did Horne. Ioane's injury saw him a bit patchy when he came back. Mitchell looked to be heading the right direction before he was injured. Beale kicked far too much possession away and played more like an individual than part of a team. ACC as I said was average. McCabe is not an inside centre and as a Brumbies supporter I want to like him, but I'm still on the fence. Fainga has been a far better bench player coming on late in the game to bolster the mid-field defence. Cooper never look like he recovered from the Reds Super win until the first 20 minutes of this last game. Genia has struggled behind a faltering forward pack and it is worrying how often he runs off and gets isolated resulting in a turn over...the memory of it at Twicks still burns brightly in my mind.

Onto the forwards: Samo has been good at No. 8, but not to the level of a fully fit Palu. Pocock is a truly international forward, but needs the others to help him more. Elsom - he played no Super rugby so his average form shouldn't be a surprise, rapidly fading star. Sharpe has had a pretty good season and the lineout has looked better with him. Vickerman has tried, but he need more rugby under his belt. Kepu and Alexander have given out penalties, but offer more on the park over Ma'afu and Slipper. What if concerning Robinson and Ireland will be asked for some time to come. Moore is probably the only other forward (Pocock the other) that the NH teams would put into their sides if they could.

Now the bench., which I'm going to be surprising mostly positive about. Burgess in his limited time looked more in touch than Genia did and did more challenging of the line (and not turning the ball over) instead of just funnelling off to the backs. Mitchell looked good, but injury and Dean's preference for Ioane would have probably kept him from making any impact against SA or NZ. Horne looked far more of a challenge to defences than either McCabe, Fainga or AAC in his short game time. Barnes spent too much time on the bench. The forwards: Slipper and Polato-Nau I still have question marks over, S. Fainga isn't great but he is probably the next best hooker and I still think Ma'afu should be ahead of Slipper. Higginbotham's form looked superior to Elsoms and probably deserve more starts. Simmons I'm on the fence about. McCalman was on a hiding to nothing at open side flanker and he failed to make a significant impression at no. 8.

For the tournament I'd give the Wallabies 5 or 6 out of 10. I didn't expect them to win, but I thought they would have given a better account for themselves than they did.

Still a short tour of the NH to come, it will be interesting to see who is fit to make the journey.

It's better than in the last RWC when NZ played Scotland - NZ in their away black-and-grey strip, Scotland in their home dark-bluish and black jerseys. The clash of jerseys was quite painful on the eyes at first, although looking at the flow of action it was pretty easy to tell which side was which after a while. :guffaw:

Grumbling about refereeing / umpiring can come across as a cop-out, but there's been some really poor performances by the officials in this event. If that pass last night wasn't a metre forward, then it was two or three metres forward; the mind boggles at how all three on-field officials managed to miss it. Then we were pinged a few minutes later for a very marginal one. It didn't affect the result but plenty of other poor calls have (the Wales "missed" penalty against SA, for one).

As for your player rankings, I'm not entirely in agreement but no matter. :D One bloke I reckon we're going to miss more than anticipated is Burgess. He added an extra dimension when he came on last night, and has seemed a much better player than when Deans was determined to establish him as the first-choice 9. One or two games excepted, Genia hasn't looked the same player this year - all that ridiculous box kicking against SA made him look a pretty ordinary player, in fact.

I'll also be hoping that Barnes and Horne can stay fit, and that Deans wakes up to himself and keeps Barnes in the starting 15. Like Sharpe, Barnes seems to not be in favour (his injury concerns this year notwithstanding); why is anyone's guess, but it makes little sense to have top-shelf players warming the bench when the people picked ahead of them simply aren't anywhere near as good.

Yeah, my rankings of players is somewhat coloured by whether I like them, which is also impacted by which club they play for, so it's far from the most objective assessment.

Burgess was not great a few seasons ago, but has come along. The next in line seems to be Phibbs and he is not in the same class as Genia or Burgess at the moment.

As for Barnes I think his not been in favour has to do with the Reds Super success and the knock on effect it has had for the Wallabies in terms of tactics and even leadership role changes.

Not quite over yet but for the FTA telecast I give Ch.9 a 3/10.

Well, I despise the Brumbies (my contempt for Canberra and pretty much everything associated with it knows very few bounds) and dislike Queensland as a matter of principle :D, but when they wear a gold jumper I don't give a crap who they play for the rest of the time. Unfortunately, that view isn't shared by certain cretins in the media and I reckon a few players fit into that category as well. But no matter.

My biggest gripe with 9 is that they got that Hadley fucktard to do the commentary for the NZ game - not that I listened to the arsehole, of course, but still. What the frell that was about I don't know, but otherwise I have no major complaints.
