Ruby-Spears "Superman" Series Arrives Nov 3rd, 09

I never really liked the Christopher Reeve "bumbling Clark Kent". Honestly that's really the only place that Clark was that clumsy and bumbling. Dude could barely walk a straight line without tripping. Even in the late 70s/80s Clark wasn't that goofy. Superman was more goofy than Clark. Clark was pretty cool - to an extent. And especially after the Byrne revamp he went from the geek to well... less geeky.

I think the reason I really like the bumbling movie Clark Kent is because of the pure charm Reeve had in the role. He was so good there, that I think if it hadn't come across so well, it could easily have been a total disaster. But he makes it work. I do prefer the more serious takes on the character available, but I just love that movie - it's just such a fun, pure fantasy all around.

I remembered this show well. I am thinking a lot of you were too young or just caught up in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This was the only super hero show on at the time.

Well, the TMNT were superheroes, so you're kind of contradicting yourself there. Also in 1988 there was C.O.P.S., about a team of superpowered police officers; Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, about a team of superpowered space lawmen; BraveStarr in a similar vein; and Marvel Action Universe featuring Robocop along with reruns of earlier Spider-Man cartoons.

And that's just animation. As I said above, the live-action Adventures of Superboy debuted in the same year as the Ruby-Spears Superman.

I guess I should have said in my book, I never considered them to be super-heroes especially back then. Could not stand TMNT. COPS and Robocop are sci fi, because non of the COPS had powers except Bulletproof and he was a cyborg like Robocop. Spider-Man and his amazing friends were reruns in second run, Dino Riders was sci fi.

In my neck of the woods there was no Galaxy Rangers or Bravestarr that was on TV, no cable and definitely no internet for the masses. And I was talking about cartoons and not live action.

^Well, your personal tastes don't define objective reality. The Ninja Turtles definitely qualified as superheroes. And RoboCop was created specifically to be a comic-book style superhero. Sci-fi and superheroes are not mutually exclusive genres.
