RTD Style Daleks Coming Back!

Another revelation leaked from 'The Brilliant Book Of Doctor Who' is this quote from Moffat:

"The fact is, we're not going to lose the old Daleks. We're keeping them. They're coming back. We'll just use them all at once, and have different ranks. All I've done is give the Daleks an officer class."

So are all supposed to just pretend that that in no way matches up with what happened in VOTD or what was said in any of the many interviews given about the Fatleks earlier in the year?

That is correct! We will accept this generous and appropriate gift from he and the BBC, and will praise joy that we, the fans, are allowed the simple luxury of seeing the kind of Daleks we want to see.

Why, how did you misread it? ;)

Personally, I've always liked the idea that there were different models of Daleks out there. Even before "Victory of the Daleks," we already had a story where there were different colored Daleks together, so the idea of an officer class Dalek is very cool with me...

Different looking Daleks is nothing new; there was that red one from a season or two back.

However, I'm not convinced that this was the plan all along.

Me either, but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. If nothing else, it certifies that the Beeb is open to listening to public reaction and responding in kind.

Didn't the designer of the console also get "let go"? I wonder if he had anything to do with the Fatleks?

Except the whole point of VOTD was that the Daleks we had seen since DW has returned were "unpure" inferior Daleks and this was the return of the real thing. They RTD ones were literally exterminated out of the series on screen.

Though given that by the time of the Finale they were only shooting the new Daleks in full from the front (go back and check!) they seem to have realised their mistake pretty quickly.

It'd be a bit awkward, if you ask me. I mean, those RTD style Daleks in VOTD were supposed to be the last of their kind in existence, right? And if the Progenitor Daleks are supposed to be more pure and advanced, why the heck would they go back to the old design? The new Daleks may not be entirely perfect, but I'd rather the show just stuck with them from now on. And what's with labelling the new Daleks an officer class, when they're clearly divided into different castes themselves, e.g. Leader, Scientist, Strategist, Drone, etc?

You have to remember that Moffat is also the man who now insists he always thought of Matt Smith's first series as Series 5...

Well, it's really no different than all the orgasmic hyperbole that RTD tried to shill us about every single thing that ever happened in his Doctor Who. If I heard him say "Brilliant", "Wonderful", or "Marvelous" one more time I was going to vomit.

Bottom-line: No one in the business is immune from the directives of marketing and PR. Instead of that being an issue, why not get that they are giving us exactly what we wanted? Why complain or act like this is some great disturbance in the Force?

Never judge a Dalek by its casing. As far back as the seond Dalek story in the very first season we had variants on the original casing, which itself was abandoned by the third story when the Daleks got true independence. I don't at all mind the new Daleks, though I can understand why some people do.

I like the idea of having an "officer class" of Daleks. So we're to believe that the Daleks are off recreating a zillion new "grunt" Daleks with the old props (and perhaps a new paint job) while the power rangers rule over them? This only clashes with the Dalek episode of the video games this year, but that may be ignored in continuity if they wanted to...

Translation: "Everybody hates them, they only look any good from the front, and nobody's buying the merchandise of them, even though they are still buying the RTD-era Daleks..."

Well given that the implication with the VOTD Daleks is that the Moffat-Ds are 100% Kaled DNA and the RTD-Ds are mutts, it's make sense that the Maffat-Ds would be inclined to use the RTD-Ds as cannon fodder in a effort to protect the real/true bloodlines. At least till they're up an running as race again.

Though we could be getting a set-up for another Dalek Civil War type story.

I'm not convinced about that. According to the 2011 Doctor Who Annual, The Unstoppable Daleks -

Desperately searching for a way to resurrect their race, the Daleks discovered the Progenitor, a device containing the means to rebuild the creatures in their most perfect form. But there was a problem. The Daleks who found it had become so impure during their genetic manipulations to stay alive, that they were no longer recognised.

..

Huge and imposing, these new monsters represent the Daleks at the height of their power.

..

By the time the refugees from the Crucible had recovered it, they had been so contaminated during their fight for survival that the machine could no longer recognise them.

That last part, particularly, seems to suggest only the post-Crucible Daleks were impure, though I expect the Bad Wolf ones probably were too since they were made from human cells. However, there is no reason to think that applies to the Dalek in Dalek.

It also could be inferred that some classic series Daleks were not "the Daleks at the height of their power."

I was going to step in here and point out that when the New Paradigm showed up in Victory they felt the RTDaleks were so impure that the first thing they did was destroy them. But I see lip-service has already been paid and that has been explained, although in a half-assed way.

I'll admit, the idea of the New Paradigm being an "officer class" and the RTDaleks presumably being lower class commoners is kind of neat. Depending on how its executed, it could be enough to overlook the mess the presence of the New Paradigm has caused.

Demand has outweighed supply for the new Daleks, though they seem reluctant to let the old ones go too.
