I mentioned this in the misc forum but this probably is the better place for it. I'd like to know if anybody here has any experience with robotics concerning ROVs? I'd like to know any tips or information that could help. Let say, building a ROV with a bunch of supplies and on a budget of $500. Thank you.

For underwater like on Titanic. If one googles "ROV", it's the only kind that comes up on the first page.

your biggest obstacle is going to be getting your thrusters and other moving parts. i'd say start by heading down to your local dive shop, and asking around about second hand equipment, like old sleds or something you can cannibalize.

i wouldnt know about the programming and robotics side, but that's where i would get started as far as parts go!

Well, you could probably use some CPU cooling fans as thrusters, I suppose. Not exactly powerful or particularly efficient, but hey... they'll get you moving.

Cheers,

My dad used to make custom drive systems for model boats and things.

IIRC, for submersible engines, he used a sealed metal can with motor mounted inside. The drive shaft passed through a thin tube to the propeller. The tube was soldered to the can. So the only way water could enter would be through that tube.

To prevent ingress of water, the tube was filled with grease. This was enough to keep the water away from the motor, but allowed the drive shaft to rotate within the grease.
