Routers: D-Link vs. LinkSys?

I am contemplating purchasing a 4-port router. I've got them pretty much nailed down to two choices, the D-Link EBR-2310 and the LinkSys BEFSR41. Anyone here have experience with either?

I am sorta leaning towards the D-Link, since their Mac support seems to be better (unlike LinkSys, they actually have some).

Only D-Link router I tried I couldn't get to work, and I know pretty well what I am doing. Never had a problem with a Linksys, so that's what I stick with.

I don't know if this counts but I have a linksys WRT54G wireless router and I have it connected to a 20" iMAC. I have never had any problems with it in the year I have had the mac. Either when it's been hooked up wirelessly or connect to via ethernet cable (which it normally is). I have only heard bad things about the D-link, and mostly that it is a badly re-badged linksys.

Do any of you LinkSys people have to reboot your routers ever? That's what I keep hearing about their routers, that they have to be rebooted a lot or will spontaneously go offline.

I've had to do that but it's only been since I moved to Idaho and got cable internet. For some strange reason, about once a month, I have to reboot both to get my internet back up. Before I moved I had DSL and never had to reboot the router. Hope this helps.

Have a D-Link DSL router that's now 5 years old and still going strong. My experiences at work with Linksys kit on the other hand have been somewhat mixed - had one router (bought for a staff member) that was DOA but another that one of my colleagues set up that's not been a moment's bother. That said I usually recommend Netgear routers for home use these days as they just work straight out of the box and are a doddle to set up.

^ I thought about Netgear, but unfortunately the Best Buy in my area only carries their wireless routers (which I have zero interest in).

Another vote for D-Link; I've never had a problem with my wireless router. One time I got kicked off and it came right back up in a matter of moments, and that's only happened once. Another time I lost the connection I thought there was something wrong with the router, but it turned out it was a problem with my ISP.

I have the Linksys BEFSR41 that you mention, although there have been revision models. I have been running it 24/7 for about 4 years, no problems at all. Occasionally I have rebooted it at the same time I reboot my modem, just because they're on the same power bar and it's easiest just to hit the switch on the bar.

I would only say, avoid stacking it with other devices. They are built externaly so you can stack them, but I found they heat up too much. I had it stacked for a while with the DSL modem just to keep them out of the way, but the modem got too hot.

Very very occasionally, like maybe a couple of times a year. I don't consider it a problem.

Is this common? Man, it seems like I have to reset my router at least twice a week, sometimes more (WRT54G Version 5).

Just checked my firmware, and it's up to date, even though the last issue was last July. Very annoying.

Other than that, it works fine. :p

Well, I decided to go with the D-Link. Works great.

Besides, this router is so small, it's just so...cute, sitting there on the shelf like that.

I've setup/used two D-Link routers and one Linksys in the past. Never had any problems with the D-Link but the Linksys was dysfunctional.

But all of this is meaningless anecdote. Go with the one that looks coolest.

Ah, you did!

I actually went mostly by customer reviews when I chose the D-Link. I heard too many horror stories about the LinkSys. Plus, when I went to buy it, there were no LinkSyses in stock anyway, so I take that as a good sign. :borg:
