Ronnie Dio - Five Years Gone

It's my birthday, so I always remember -

Probably the greatest hard rock vocalist ever, Ronnie Dio passed away five years ago today.

Ronnie, you're missed.

Always.

I'm a big fan of Sabbath with Ozzy, but Dio let them do stuff they couldn't with Ozzy. Iommi produced much of his best stuff on Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules. I've seen both lineups several times - with Dio they were a different band.

My love of Dio isn't just down to Sabbath anyway. His stuff with Rainbow was incredible, and a lot of his solo stuff was great too.

Dio was irreplaceable.

It hasn't been said yet, fuck...cancer.

But, it's a good example of why we should have anything odd checked out. Early diagnosis = a much better chance of survival.

One of the greatest metal vocalists ever.

I am sorry, but Ozzy was a better vocalist for Sabbath and in his solo career.

Dio was ALWAYS a better vocalist. But I'll admit Ozzy was the best vocalist for Blizzard of Ozz (the actual name of the band, later changed by the record company).

I never gave Ronnie James Dio any credit. To me, Black Sabbath was Ozzy Osbourne version only. Then, seven years ago, I had the privilege of seeing Heaven and Hell (what the Dio version of Black Sabbath was calling themselves when touring). Then, a year or two later, I saw them a second time. Seeing him live completely changed my opinion (although he did have a habit of talking a bit too much). He truly is a legend and he will be missed.

I disagree. I think Ronnie Dio was a good vocalist, but he was homogenous. There were a handful of guys who sounded like him. No one has ever sounded like Ozzy. Ozzy is unique, and I think if he had instead sang the music Sabbath did with Dio it would have sounded even better.

As much as I love Ronnie over Ozzy (and I do love Ozzy), Ronnie had a style similar to Kevin Dubrow, Paul Shortino and Marc Storace (those are the ones I can reel off from memory). Kind of a screamy/growly thing.

This is the song I first heard Ronnie do:

I'm not religious at all, but in the late 80's I was out to discover all the solo work by members of Kansas and Kerry's 1980 solo album was the best of all the solo works.

The story has it that Ronnie didn't know it was a christian song, but felt it was one of the best songs he ever did.
