Ronan and Beverly’s Nana on Sub Rosa

In the episode Sub Rosa we learn that Ronan was a “boyfriend” of the Howard women “for generations.” He was an anaphasic life form that needed an organic host to live (or something like that). Bev said something to the effect that at some point Ronan must have realized that the Howard women had the right biochemical makeup that Ronan needed to live. If you recall from the episode, Ronan killed a friend of Bev’s Nana. I believe they said that it was anaphasic energy that killed him. After the crew figured this out, they realized that there was a large reading of anaphasic energy coming from Nana’s grave. In fact, it was her body that was letting off this energy. They said that she died from natural causes, but yet they didn’t realize that she had a large amount of anaphasic energy until the end of the episode. Do you think that Ronan’s relationship with Nana is what led to her death? I can’t figure it out, especially since at the end of the episode Bev tells Deanna she’s sad and that despite what Ronan did, he made her Nana very happy.

I doubt that the anaphasic energy was part of her cause of death. The intensity of his energy seemed to be under his control, he used a lethal dose for Quint, and a lower dosage for the Howard women. He also wouldn't have had a motive, he needed them alive, they were no good to him dead.

Yeah, it's more likely that she passed from age, thereby beginning his hunt for a new hookup. The creepy part is the mental slavery they seem to be subjected to

I guess at that time they were happy to have a story after all, even if not the best one.

Nevermind what Bev was thinking ... what were the writers thinking?!

Apparently they read the Mayfair Witches trilogy by Ann Rice. (The Witching Hour)
where a woman named Dr. Rowan Mayfair who is ignorant of her family history suddenly gets haunted by the spirit creature Lasher whose been attached to the family for generations.

The entire episode I kept thinking, wow this all sounds so familiar. LOL

This is just such a stupid episode from start to finish. The implication is that Nanna Howard, like many of the women in her family before her, was just completely obsessed with this Ronan character..... and the way it's presented to us in the episode, it is like an obsession, almost making them reliant upon Ronan as if he were a drug of some sort. Yet earlier on, Beverly told us of her Grandmother being a healer, and how it had encouraged her to become a doctor herself..... as its presented in "Sub Rosa", I can't see how anyone could be a functioning member of a society in that situation, let alone encourage others into the healing profession. The whole premise just feels totally cheap to me, as if the writer thought there would be shock value to showing how all the Howard women had been corrupted over the centuries by this mysterious man, but the writers hadn't really bothered to think about the logic behind that idea.

That's all very interesting, actually. I did not know about this trilogy, because I am not read up on Ann Rice, actually. I own one novel of hers and I hate her take on updated vampires, and what she started with all of that. And now, to find out that she inspired this episode, it kind of all makes sense. Crusher's my favourite STAR TREK physician and any story they gave her was at least tolerable, just for that.
