Virtuality, ugh. It was hard even to get through the pilot episode.
RDM is too focused on fancy concepts and dialogue and not enough on the basic trick of grabbing a TV audience: give us at least one character whose job it is to grab and hang onto the audience, by being a) in trouble and b) having some essential likable quality. And make sure the audience gets the message fast, like within the first ten minutes, because people have no patience nowadays.
For instance, what if Jamie Bamber's awkwardness using magic means his job is on the line? Sure, that's a hokey cliche stolen from other cop shows, but that's the kind of thing that works. Make us care about him, or someone, as a character, and then worry about explaining the rules of the magic game as we go.
