Romulans, Voyager and the war

The thread about the dominion war and Voyager got me thinking. I am not familiar with the exact timelines of it all, but it seems that the Romulans were our allies in the Dominion War and yet they attacked the Prometheus in "Message in a Bottle". As far as I can tell that took place during the war.

Now it was the Tal Shiar who attacked and tried to take over but would that do that to a "friend" during war time?

Any thoughts?

I suppose that, in a war, you can't be too picky about your allies, like the US and Britain were with the USSR in WWII.

With that said, with the stakes involved in the Dominion War, I would be quick to forgive a nation that tried to steal a highly advanced ship if it meant saving the rest of the known galaxy.

Message in the bottle took place BEFORE In the pale moonlight....

The EMH 2 clearly stated that the Romulans weren't involved in the war at that point.

the romulans, being valuable potential allies, probably thought they could get away with just about anything!

That and the Federation probably wasn't too mad considering the Prometheus kicked the crap out of the Romulan fleet that was sent to collect the ship.

I would assume that Starfleet swept this entire incident under the rug. With the war not going well at that point in time and the Romulans being potential allies they probably wouldn't want public opinion to turn against the Romulans. The Federation also could not take the chance of pissing off the Rommulans and having them join the Dominion.

Just to add a few factoids, "Message in a Bottle" took place at stardate 51462, while the Romulans would join the UFP cause after "Pale Moonlight" at SD 51721.

So the hijacking of the Prometheus would make pseudohistorical sense, and would be just a minor addition to the list of things the Romulans did to undermine the Federation, such as supporting the Jem'Hadar cause. And if the Feds could forgive the Romulan/Dominion pact, then just as argued above, they'd be all the more willing to forgive a bit of good old-fashioned direct UFP/RSE antagonism...
