romulans and the federation,allies?.

Mr Pointy Ears

With the ending of nemesis having the romulans finally agreeing to talk, this got me thinking, what if the talks were successful and they became allies like they did with the klingons?and maybe in the future the romulus and the klingons would become members of the federation, could something like that happen?.

Maybe, but I think that's a stretch. In Nemesis we see one captain willing to make friends with Picard, perhaps only temporarily and to suite her own goals, perhaps not. We don't know that Donatra spoke for the Romulan government or even the fleet. I'm all for Romulan/Federation friendship, but we really can't tell what the post-Nemesis galaxy would bring based on what we saw in Nemesis. Even if the Romulans warmed up to the Federation, I don't think that they would join the Federation. The Romulans have always appeared independent and self-righteous, so I'm don't think they would play well with others.

Can somebody who read the books tell us what happens after Nemesis? I know about the split, but how is going so far? Are those books worth reading? It seems like they really streched the politics out

I think it speaks for the weakness in the 'Nemesis' story line.

I would have liked to see something more along the lines of what we got with the Klingons in 'Undiscovered Country'.

That is after the Dominion War, an era of peace between the Federation and the Romulans is dawning. However, some Romulans arn't ready for peace and seek to sabotage that peace. It would have been neat to see Captain Picard pitted against a Romulan commander who is in every way his equal, but not ready to accept peace with the Federation.

Another idea would have been to bring back 'Sela' who hatred of her human half makes the idea of peace with the Federation detestable. She stages a coup, and the rest of the story plays out about the same.

I actually always felt that the Romulans should have been the allies of the Federation in TNG instead of the Klingons. It just seemed more believable to me.

Really, you think that the Romulans are the natural allies to the Federation. Why because the Vulcans are allies & part of the UFP? The Romulans fought a long and embittered war, that they essentially lost, they are isolationist and they have a huge superiority complex.

I can see the Klingons allies more naturally. They have gone to battle with the Federation, enough to earn a begrudging respect. They even fear / admire the Captain of the Federation flag ship. They have had a state of war, but not gone to war. I see them closer in temperament and commonality.

Erm..... the surviving Romulans may join the Federation, but as we saw in Star Trek (2009), Romulus itself most definitely won't.

Since Romulus got blown up by a supernova and the Empire's government is gone any considerations of the political relationship between the feds and the Romulan senate/praetor are null. The survivors either A.) had a "back to Vulcan" migration or B.) became space pirates.

It was stretched out a little too much, but it's settled into to something interesting and believable with the Romulan Star Empire joining the Typhon Pact and the other side being allies with the Federation.

^Erm....
In Rough Beasts of Empire, the Imperial Romulan State is dissolved, and the empire reunited, after Empress Donatra's inprisionment and eventual suicide.

Peace with Romulans seemed to be in the making for a while now. Remember, DS9's Paradise Lost begins with Romulans on Earth for a peace conference. And Romulans did join forces with the Federation to fight the Dominion. It seemed odd that Nemesis implied they'd become enemies again, but at least there were talks of peace again by the end. Then XI went an blew Romulus up.

The novels really get off on complex galactic politics, so much so that at times I wonder if they remember Star Trek is supposed to be about exploration. And that's not a comment I made before reading the A Time To series.
