Romulan War. Why so much?

Christopher, isn't it only the fibre from certain trees though? I remember reading that somewhere. And yes, I agree that there are other sources for fibres to make paper, they're probably even more expensive or we'd be using them to make paper from. The Museum of London Annex I used to be archivist at used Tyvek paper to label everything as it doesn't degrade to any significant degree and is almost impossible to tear, but that is ridiculously expensive currently.

If trees were cut down specifically for books, then DRGIII's books would need a sequoia. ;)

Do you agree that print-on-demand and eBooks are likely to replace bookstores?

Well, Wikipedia says: "Wood pulp comes from softwood trees such as spruce, pine, fir, larch and hemlock, and hardwoods such as eucalyptus, aspen and birch." I assume from the "such as" that it's not an exhaustive list.

We already have a lot of paper made from recycled materials. More than half of the paper currently made in the US is recycled.

I don't know. It sounds plausible, but many predictions of the death of one institution or another have sounded plausible and haven't come true. Maybe bookstores will find a way to adapt.

Count me as another who dislikes the TPB format. Bigger pages are offset by bigger print size---you aren't actually getting any additional story. MMPBs are much easier to take with you places and to hold with one hand.

I like TPB having the larger print type. I like it better than the small print in the MMPB books it causes eyestrain and it can be frustrating not to be able to finish a chapter it's a real nuisance when the story is getting really good. I'm glad to be able to read a book with larger print.MMPB are handy to take with you. I just wish they'd use a larger typesetting that's what would make it easier to read some of the newer StarTrek books.

I also like the TPB because of the larger format and print. WRT ebooks, while pirating isn't likely much of an issue that needs correcting in the publishing world (not really sure), maybe it would be worth looking at combining the ebook with the printed version when you buy the book. I have seen the same thing recently done with DVDs; you get the movie on disc and can download a portable version as well.

At least Romulan War, by page count, looks to be half again as long as Treason, so in this case it probably is a longer story.

And the other trades - Mirror Universe, Myriad Universes, short story collections - are indeed larger in word count than MMPBs.

That's not a rule of thumb. Most of ST's hardcovers have been longer-than-usual stories, and that format has now shifted to trade. NF's "Treason" (in trade) seemed to me to be longer than the old NF original MMPBs.

Also, remember the tiny print they had to use on the MMPBs of "Mission Gamma: Twlight" and "Crucible: McCoy" in order to squeeze their page counts into a MMPB. Chunky MMPBs are more prone to spine cracks - I had to buy a second copy of MG #1 and #2 to replace the ones I damaged while (carefully) reading them.

Maybe bookstores will find a way to adapt.

Check 'em out! They sell stuffed toys, jigsaw puzzles, stationery, colouring books and the crayons to go with them, even chocolate and drinks!

I like the longer storylength TPB like Alternate realities and Myriad universe.I'm glad The next Enterprise book is going to be a simliar longer length type of story fans have been wanting for along time.:techman:Especially when dealing with the events in the Earth/Romulan wars.

So long as they don't charge you extra for the "digital copy", as they're trying to do with DVDs. Once I've bought the damn thing I should be allowed to convert it to whatever format is most convenient for me, at no extra charge.

I'm one of those picky readers when it comes to my books.

I don't really like trade paperbacks and when I get my MMPBs I always get the US version opposed to the UK version. I really don't like the style of the UK versions...the printing goes too close to the edge of the paper, the font is actually too large and the cover art is usually ugly to me.
By the way, I live in Taipei and the bookstores usually carry both the UK and US versions for major titles.
My exception fo rthis is the Harry Potters...it seems to me like the US versions(put out by Scholastic I think) all the paper in those feels crinkly, like it's mildly water damaged...has anyone else noticed this.

So why would they make previous books one size and then this one larger? Not that this is a big deal but when placed next to the others on a shelf it will look like crap being a different size. I have all my previously read books on a shelf in order.

My solution is to put the trades and hardcovers on a separate shelf from the MMPBs. Course my shelves are overcrowded and not terribly neat anyway.
