Seems like the Romulans get defeated by their own paranoia. They would destroy the very fleet that could have saved them because of their inability to trust. I bet almost no one will feel sorry for them after the supernova destroyed their empire.

it could also be in line with the question about another unauthorized mission... Maybe the largest rescue armada he leads was unauthorized after the Romulans attack the shipyards.
