As resurrecting old threads is deemed bad, I didn't look if there was any previous discussion of this script. George Clayton Johnson originally pitched this as his second TOS script, but apparently he was friends with this guy Scott Michael Keppler, who pitched it for a fifth season TNG script. It's a lot like Emergence.
A few those stories and ideas come across as being really bad, or misplaced in terms of ideas. Especially for Geordi, and the fact they couldn't repurpose it for Harry... There were better avenues for Geordi if they wanted, and they weren't used, or considered, either.
"Genius is Pain" is either Wesley Crusher's real species (see that Geordi idea from above), or Adric's.
Data's family where Lore takes over Lal's brain... call it "LOL" because it's really bad.
Amazingly, the Amish story came across better (if not still inconsistent) in the 1998 movie "Insurrection".)
Also, it'd take more convincing that "Elvis Meets the Enterprise" wasn't an attempt to troll Ronald D Moore. Then again, had this been season 1 and on top of that if they would have attempted comedy or self-aware prodding thanks to TOS bringing in Earth famous people... but even by 1987, that wouldn't fly.
