Robots?

This is true. The whole 31st century thing would look a lot more impressive if they'd jumped from authentic TOS visuals too rather than their "make it look as advanced as possible!" reboot to the "oh shit, make everything white plastic!" future.

That should have been how the series started, right?

This week MU robots! LOL

...The first time those are seen indoors? That is, even in the Pike short, they didn't exactly mingle, but floated in the big scary-looking space around the warp core.

I'd think the Emperor's big party would be the very last place in which greasy servants would be allowed. Especially if they are of the sort that doesn't squeal satisfyingly when kicked, stabbed or burned for infractions.

Honestly, I've always seen the lack of robots in Star Trek to be something of an oversight. Sure, there were the evil "guest stars" like Nomad, M-4, V'Ger in the original series. And maybe there's justification for workbees to run in autonomous mode. And then there's Data and the exocomps (Oooo! A band name!) But they were always an afterthought to the core premise.

Discovery has retconned them into the franchise ... first through that goofy Short-Trek cartoon, and now on-screen live action. I expect to see them milling about on Pike's Enterprise.

I imagine there should be all kinds of robots ... security, damage control, maybe even swarms of "sensor bots" that behave like the "Whiskers" of Seaquest D.S.V. That is, drones that circle the ship and add to its ability to detect weird phenomena and threats.

Having said all of that, though, I confess I don't actually like seeing the things. They just look out of place. And the ones of the 32nd century look stupid. Those should be simple blobs of programmable matter that float through the corridors and take whatever form is necessary for a specific problem. Less R2D2 and more Rover (from The Prisoner).

Having them look like starship corridors is fine with me. Why move when you can simply be there to begin with?

Robots that work outside the ship are a different matter, and perhaps were there whenever Scotty was doing corresponding repairs indoors? Scotty's repairs in turn would have consisted of X% elbow grease and 100-X% giving repair commands to the robots that comprised the ship herself.

I also find the lack of androids the 32nd century puzzling. (Or maybe we just haven’t had any revealed to us).

I think each StarShip should have a friendly AI like "KITT" from Knight Rider.

Then it should also have friend BiPaB shaped Androids along with your typical oddball StarWars style Androids, but more "Refined" with the Star Trek Aesthetic.

Greasy?
Why would they be greasy?
Robotics by the 23rd century would be so advanced that it wouldn't need grease and majority of stuff we use.
They probably operate on the principle of magnetics and are likely cleaner than most humanoids (humans/Terrans included).
And why would they be doing any infractions?
They'd be doing exactly what they were programmed to do, and if there is a mistake, the offending robot would likely be vaporized on the spot or taken to be scrapped.

I also find the lack of androids the 32nd century puzzling. (Or maybe we just haven’t had any revealed to us).

Perhaps... but for all we know, the androids would basically appear as any other living flesh and blood organism and it wouldn't need to be mentioned at all... that is until the time is right for the Disco crew to know about androids (aka, a mission leads them to get involved in whatever issues the androids may have).

In the meantime, the Disco crew did get all the Federation database updates in the 32nd century, so, its possible few crewmembers would be aware of them.

Mind you, even organic type androids would basically be 'obsolete' by the 32nd century... but since we know Trek writers have a nasty habit of making things barely more advanced even after ludicrous amount of time has passed... its unlikely we will see a more advanced concept beyond what the 24th century introduced (just more commonplace).

Greasy? Why would they be greasy? Robotics by the 23rd century would be so advanced that it wouldn't need grease and majority of stuff we use.

They're definitely messy: everything we see them do sends a cloud of sparkles around, indicating primitive methods and zero care for cleanliness or other politeness.

And why would they be doing any infractions?

Oh, an infarction is not for the committing party to decide...

They'd be doing exactly what they were programmed to do, and if there is a mistake, the offending robot would likely be vaporized on the spot or taken to be scrapped.

...And the programmer thrown into an agony booth?

I'd assume the programmer would take great care to make his or her creations eminently punishable, complete with gory effects when limbs are pulled off, and really appetizing screams. That'd vent some of the pressure that might otherwise be aimed at him or her.

Not one day goes by that I don’t think how awesome The Mandalorian is and how much Disco sucks the soul out of my body.

Disney really should buy the whole Trek franchise. Most shows will still suck but I don’t see any chance of real Star Trek with the guys and girls currently on the helm *crying lots of Burnham tears..*

I love that Discovery has given us robots in Trek. I recall it being something Bryan Fuller talked about waaaaaaaay back in 2016. Yes, they're R2/BB8 wannabes but I still adore the DOT-7's and their 32nd century friends.

Look more like Eve. Pity they don't look a bit more exocomp as an Easter egg

Discovery IS real Star Trek

Well then explain to me since when Star Trek is a show about giving dictators a hideout? Empress Georgiou took the life of millions and now they are giving her a show of her own. She never was truly sorry for all the things that she did, yet a Starfleet crew trusts her enough to go on away missions? I mean why didn’t they travel back in time and showed Hitler a parallel universe where he was a heroic defender of the Europe? After all, if Georgiou can change after killing and enslaving millions, Hitler could as well become camper #1 after killing 6 million jews...

This is not Star Trek and it is wrong.

BTW, no one cares for the robots

So you come in here and go completely off topic.

Make your own thread, don't hijack someone else's.

Oh look, you’re adorable.

Your image doesn't work (for me)

Good job trivializing the Holocaust. Are you really comparing the suffering of real people with the actions of a fictional character? Stop watching Star Trek and open a history book for crying out loud.
