When I hear robots, I think something like the drones from Oblivion, as well as exosuits like in Aliens.

But if said robot is going to be a cast member, I think it probably would be more of a humanoid type of appearance (unless they wanted to go a Johnny Five route). A robot could even look completely human, just not self-aware and/or sentient like Data was.
