Robot in disguise?

A couple summers ago, my car had the weird habit of turning on by itself. No key in the ignition, no remote start. The engine would just randomly decide to turn on.

This, coincidentally, occurred not long after the release of the Transformers movie. My roommate was convinced that my car was alive.

It's been almost 2 years since the the last time the car did this, so I stopped worrying about it. Now, tonight, it did it again. I turned my car off, got out, locked the door, and a few seconds later the engine started again!

I do not believe it is a random coincidence, especially with the ads for the Transformers sequel finally debuting on TV.

So what do you think? Is my car a robot in disguise? Or is my car simply going to explode?

Definitely a robot.

I'd say something else witty, but Megatron is holding a gun to my head.

At one point, my first car, which was a 72 Impala, was badly in need of a tune up and would run on, coughing and choking, for a good thirty seconds after I turned it off. I would just get out and walk toward the house while it slowly wheezed itself to sleep. But a couple of times, it actually managed to catch again and restart, and I had to go back and turn it off. :rommie:

It's actually a 2002 Dodge Caravan. Perfect for taking the kids to soccer practice!

(or being the designated driver to all my drunkass friends)

In seriousness, it is possible your engine is overheating, igniting gasoline still in the cylinders which is starting the combustion processes again, thus starting the engine.

This has been a problem in various models of cars before, prompting manufacturer recalls.

Once it was because of a wiring flaw in the ignition system.

That model of Caravan has various fuel system defects, a couple minor structural defects and some issues with the AC/Heater but no recalls do to ignition-system problems that we can locate...

Now my advice is to take it in and have the ignition switch replaced, just to be on the safe side... Simple wear and tear could have caused a reoccurring short somewhere.

I just asked mine, and all cars have souls.

Some are also very much offended to be refered to as "Robots". ;)

KITT are you in a Dodge Caravan?

In one of the Terminator novels they said that Skynet's first wave of Hunter Killers were cars that it took control over. If your car suddenly plays songs by the singer Sarah Connor be very afraid.

A few years ago my cars horn would stick on all by itself, especialy in cold weather. sometimes at 2 or 3 am .
I fixed it by stcking a cut down 'non-slip' pads you can get at a dollar store between the two contact plates it the steering wheel, it hasn't done it since. and the horn still works.

^I'm sorry but I can't stop laughing at the mental image of you waking up by your cars horn starting to go off in the middle of the night

yeah it was pretty annoying as the door to my bedroom was 3 ft from the carport door, which my landlord at the time let me use. so it was impossible not to ignore.

The Nissan pickup my wife used to have did that. Unfortunately, we didn't discover this until we moved to a colder climate. In the apartment we lived in at the time, our bedroom was on the backside of the apartment, and the parking area was a little bit of a walk away. Not only that, but I'm a *very* sound sleeper. It's not a pleasant thing to get woken up by the police pounding on your door at 3 AM!
