Robin Williams wants The Riddler

Some viral marketing for The Dark Knight had a Gotham Times letter to the editor from an Edward Nashton. Maybe that's the name they're using.

Well, it would help explain the amazing coincidence that a man who loves riddles would honestly be named E. Nygma. Edward Nashton slightly changing his name would make more sense; there's even a hint because he's still E.N. either way.

How about Riddler as a profiler brought into help capture Batman, only he turns out to have ulterior motives?
I was thinking something like this, but I thought Hugo Strange was a better fit as a profiler (and Nolan also likes to use those lesser seen villains as secondary characters - or in Ra's case the primary).

Hugo ends up catching Batman and throwing him in the Asylum, but that ruins Riddler's fun. Riddler then changes tactics to break Batman out which leads to third act finale confrontation of Batman, Riddler and Hugo.

Does anybody actually think that Nolan's Riddler will be anything like the comics or previous film/TV incarnations? I don't think so. If anything, The Riddler is the villain most suited to Nolan's style of storytelling and film-making. Just imagine the psychological games he could play with the audience. Modern technology could give the riddles a new level of complication! Give Batman some real detective work to do!!
Amen!

Nolan isn't going to do the Riddler like Frank Gorshin's.
It should be very clear that the Ridder played like Gorshin/Carrey's way isn't going to fit the darker real world believable style and tone set in Nolan's Batman films.
I expect the Ridder to be more wickedly cunning and arrogant, similar to Batman:TAS.

However for me personally, I think Nolan is missing out on a great casting oppertunity not casting Oswald Patton as the Penquin. Especially after seeing his performance in "Big Fan".

I could see Nolan letting him play a role akin to the one Anthony Michael Hall did in TDK, but nothing more than that.

Jude Law should be the Riddler.

Why would we suspect an American would wear a bowler hat?

No seriously, I think Law has the look of wickedness for the king of conundrums. Besides, with the Riddler its going to be about what crime he's up too. Its gotta be something big enough to hold the city at ransom and a huge get rich quick scheme. Its gotta be something big enough to threaten Bruce Wayne. You're not going to play the Riddler that way with Robin Williams. I think Law could.

Riddle me this?

How do you extort Gotham City all the way up to it's golden boy?
If I were in Nolan's shoes, that's the way I'd go.

Law would be an interesting choice. Especially playing a criminal who sees himself as being much smarter than the police or Batman.

Yea I agree, I suggested Jude a while back, his character from Road to Perdition would be a very good starting point to base The Riddler off of, although less of a murderer and more of a mind fucker.

I'd like to see Hugo Strange...perhaps he could be one of the Asylum's new psychologists after the debacle with Jonathon Crane.

Jude Law would be a good pick. But I'm betting Johnny Depp will get the role, if only because he's nearly in every movie these days.

Could somebody older like Malcom McDowell wearing his boulder hat from A Clockwork Orange pull off The Riddler?

You almost had it right, but his name is Patton Oswalt. I can see him as Oswald Cobblepot.

I've put down Law's name for The Riddler every time it has come up since when Batman Begins was still in development. I have no doubt he would be pitch perfect for it as long as Nolan isn't planning a major reinvention of the character.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the best Riddler choice in this thread, so far. I'll go with him.

And Patton Oswald is great for The Penguin, but please---no flippers! They started that crap in the 2nd Burton flick, and it bites.

I think that Nolan would make The Penguin a mob boss (he's been a nightclub owner and "businessman" in recent years, more of a racketeer than anything else. Wasn't Jude Law heavily rumored by fans to play Joker before Heath was named?

Oops, my bad.

The Joker killed off all the mob bosses in "Dark Knight", so the mob is now in disarray. Having the Penquin step in and organize the mob under the legitimacy of a Union would be right up the Penquin's alley. Make him very Al Capone in that way. Put certain Gotham big wigs in his pocket, have him run the Gotham City docks through an importing/exporting business(a way for him to supply himself with rare birds;)) and you got Gothams new head of the crime syndicate. Doing all that, you wouldn't need to make him deformed.
