Robin Williams wants The Riddler

Robin Williams has a track record with the Batman franchise, after being offered both The Joker in 1989's Batman and then The Riddler in Batman Forever. He was ultimately cast aside for Jack Nicholson and Jim Carrey respectively. He has gone on record saying how much he adores the Batman films, even campaigning for The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Well, Williams is at it again, this time saying he would love to play "anyone" in a future Batman installment but did note his preference for The Riddler. Williams and Batman series director Christopher Nolan do have a history themselves; Williams played the villain in Insomnia. He gave a very chilling and dramatic performance in that film, contrast to the usual silly comedic roles he plays, and alongside other films such as One Hour Photo prove that Williams is a very capable dramatic actor.

I don't think Nolan will choose Williams for The Riddler -- if he is the villain -- or for any role for that matter in Batman 3, mostly because I think it is too much of a safe choice for Nolan and we all know how Nolan likes to take risks, but I think if Nolan did choose Williams, and he brought a sort of Hannibal Lecter vibe to The Riddler, and played him straight... it could be very fascinating indeed.

Thoughts?

I hope not. Robin Williams is great and all...but no...it is too late for him to do this IMHO.

Whatever Nolan decides is good enough for me and Williams can be pretty damn dark if the movie demands it.

There are rumors Joseph Gordon-Levitt might be The Riddler...and I have a feeling Nolan may go with him.

I still would like Jared Leto as The Riddler. :D

The Levitt dude did his thing with Cobra Commander, and made him somewhat creepy much to my surprise in the GI Joe film. I thought CC would be a joke, with the stupid transparent mask and all, but JGL added some menace to him. I think he would make an excellent Joker. But I think Robin Williams would too. I liked his dark turns in Insomnia and One Hour Photo. It's a shame that he didn't get a crack at the character of the Riddler in Batman Forever.

Unfortunate for him the Bat films didn't come out (well at least the latter ones) during the height of his popularity. And even though he was still riding high in 1989, RW wasn't as big as star as Nicholson, plus the idea of having two 'comedic' actors in Keaton and Williams as Batman and Joker might've been too much disbelief for the audience to suspend. And I doubt that RW would've been able to go dark in Schumaker's films.

Though I hope there's a way to put him in a movie if he really wants to do it. Perhaps as the Penguin? Or Mad Hatter?

If this were 25-years ago or so I would probably hope for Mr Williams; however, at this point I don't believe he's suited for the role.

Didn't Williams turn down the role of the Riddler in Batman Forever?

In any event, there has been no indication that the Riddler will even be in the next film and if he is, I suspect he'll be played by someone we haven't even thought of yet.

Jake Gyllenhaal?

:guffaw:

:borg:

I've always Williams would make for a fantastic Riddler. He's certainly not too old to pull it off. I still think David Hyde Piece would be great in the role as well.

For some reason I always thought Robin Williams would make a great Toyman in a Superman film. :)

Damned Green Hornet, I want to post Seth Rogen as a joke name in every one of these threads. Must control myself...

Speaking of control, the one thing I don't remember seeing from Robin Williams is a performance where he feels like someone just on the edge of losing control. I've seen him manic and I've seen him depressed but I don't remember seeing him just on the edge of manic, like it takes all he can to keep it check but it's there just under the surface, which is how I'd like to see him if somehow he was to play the Riddler.

I see him more as a replacement for Heath Ledger as the Joker personally if they'd bring him back.

I could understand Williams as the Riddler personally. Wasn't he meant to be older?

I think it would be interesting to see David Tennant as the Riddler.

I'm curious what he's done that would lead you to wonder about that? I've seen Casanova and of course Doctor Who which don't seem right to me, is there something else he's done that might change my mind?

^ While he can pull off quirky (which modern comic book Riddler is), but I think people throw Tennet's name out there because he just looks the role.

I have a problem with this because the Riddler requires a good amount of energy without going over the top, and Williams has problems hitting the brakes. Nothing against him, that's an asset for his career in comedy, and his villain roles proves he can do the drama work.

I just think the Riddler is in between where he's at his best.

James Spader for Riddler!

Nolan will shock everyone and make The Dark Knight Returns (separate continuity from his other Batman movies) with Robin Williams as Batman. ;)

Does anybody actually think that Nolan's Riddler will be anything like the comics or previous film/TV incarnations? I don't think so. If anything, The Riddler is the villain most suited to Nolan's style of storytelling and film-making. Just imagine the psychological games he could play with the audience. Modern technology could give the riddles a new level of complication! Give Batman some real detective work to do!!

Robin Williams' name keeps cropping up, like Gerard Butler's did when they were re-casting Bond!! David Tennant's actually an interesting possibility, if his energy can be reined in!
