The Orci idea does have potential, I suppose--maybe when mixed with the time travel with Pops idea.
Suppose there's a rogue Vulcan (We'll call him "Soyranbok".) who lost his family in the destruction. He's after some MacGuffin that can send him back to stop the Narada before the attack. Kirk finds out and rigs it to send them all the way back to the Kelvin attack.
Spock wants to stop him but is reluctant to because he finds himself in his own "needs of the many" existential crisis. He realizes that, now 30 some years in, the effects of the new time-line has rippled across the galaxy, and the lives affected could potentially be in the trillions.
