I think Orci's screenplay would have had critics throwing the "it feels like an episode" criticism at it even harder than Beyond did. Especially given the obvious comparisons that could be made to a certain incredibly well-regarded TOS episode.
It also gives some credence to one of the rumours that I heard, namely that the Orci/Payne/McKay screenplay was "fan friendly" in the same way that Generations was; lots of stuff fans would enjoy, but it would come the the expense of the rest of the story being impenetrable to casual audiences.
I fear Orci screenplay and direction would have been critically panned
From what I remember reading quite a while back, it corroborates the above. There was a group of Vulcans who heard of something that could restore the timeline and therefore, the planet Vulcan and its six billion inhabitants. They wanted to find that thing and started searching for it. Kirk and crew ended up in the search as well, as did a third group, a new alien race. I think Kirk's orders were to see to it the reset button wasn't pushed. It wasn't. That's all I remember, if any of that was even true. That and the script was apparently criticized for being "too Trekky," which is an interesting criticism given the content of STB.Turns out some rumours regarding Bob's ST3 were true after all.

Probably because Paramount still had to pay him for the work he had done anyway. Orci definitely had no creative input on Beyond. You can tell because it doesn't suck.(Orci did get a producer's credit in the credits at the end of STB, by the way.)
There is some disbelief. Is it Orci sarcasm? Anyway, the theme says "temptation." It sounds to me like Kirk and Spock would possibly decide at the end to not "interfere" with the natural course of events. i.e., the Abramsverse survives.
Turns out some rumours regarding Bob's ST3 were true after all.

I kinda remember Harlin Ellison going on about them not using his creations without proper payment.
That pretty much describes what Harlan Ellison does every day.
Even if the film fails to break even I'd bet my Enterprise quadcopter that we haven't seen the end of Star Trek on film. Especially since Discovery has already made a profit before shooting a single scene.
