Roberto Orci Not Directing Trek XIII

This presumably has something to do with his lack of directing experience, whether or not the parting was amicable.

I know opinion was divided on Orci directing and I understand why, but this is a good outcome. Orci can still be involved as writer/producer (unless he's out completely), but you can't mount a film of this size competently without ever having directed anything, no matter how involved you've been in the production. This now has a chance of being a well-made film.

Badass Digest is reporting a possible plot for the film, and it doesn't sound terribly promising.

The next big question is whether Orci staying on board as producer (which the Hollywood Reporter confirms) is genuine or just contractual, and therefore whether they're sticking with the current script or starting again.

Presumably not starting again if they want to make a 2016 date, but they hired Orci, and also fired him, so really anything seems possible.

Right now this is all nothing but wishful thinking and unsupported rumor. I think I'll wait until more solid evidence comes along. Hell, the "badass digest" report is based off the deadline report, which is based on nothing at the moment.

This isn't the same as a rumor from a film blog. All three major trade sites are reporting it, and given there probably won't be a press release announcing such negative buzz until a new director is hired, this is as close to official as we can get.

This may be a good thing. It's not impossible that a first-time director could've done a good job, but I'm concerned that Orci may be too big a Trek fan to make a Trek film that's objectively good as a movie rather than just an exercise in fannish indulgence. If that plot outline is for real, it would seem to tend toward the latter. It probably would be better to bring in a more experienced director who could bring a fresh voice to the series.

Which three major trade sites? The Hollywood Reporter hasn't named their source, and sites like Slashfilm are getting their information from deadline. Even Variety's source is deadline. Now, I'm not saying it isn't possible, but nothing has been confirmed.

Devin Faraci has updated his piece to say that the aforementioned story was one of the problem factors and that the production was shut down last month.

Yes, this is rumor, but Faraci has deep contacts in the industry, so it's certainly worth discussing as likely if not taking it as hard fact.

Meyer or Frakes!! (j/k :D)

Yeah EW would be a good replacement. and I liked the sound of that plot outline!!

Deadline is a trade site as well. They're not in the business of reporting rumors. Studios routinely give them stories to release as 'exclusives'. It's how the trade press works. If they report it, it's pretty much fact.

Plus, we probably won't get an official confirmation because Paramount would be admitting in a shiny press release that they screwed up.

Well, I think I'll wait for something more concrete anyway.

YES! Please forgive me for being happy that the 9/11 truther who argues incoherently with fans in blog comments and was largely responsible for the mess of STID's script is off the job.

I was fine with Orci directing because it would most likely mean more of the same Trek in that same Abrams-style.

Edgar Wright could potentially make a great movie.

Here's hoping Trek 3 beats Ant Man. :p

Will Trek XIII make the 2016 release date? Are they still scrambling for that all important 50th anniversary of TOS? :vulcan:

That plot blurb (small and vague as it is) sounds like fan fiction. It also makes little sense on several levels. I hope it's only a rumor. It's more worrisome to me than the Orci report. I'm sure there are several fine directors in Hollywood that could do a good job with "Star Trek".
