Robert Hoy has died.

Commodore
Robert Hoy, who played miner 'Sam' at the beginning of 'Devil in the Dark', has died at the age of 82.*
He was uncredited in the role.
He worked as mostly a stunt/ bit part player but was a regular on 'High Chaparall'

R.I.P. Bob and I'm sure you're not 'underground' in the afterlife.

If this picture takes---he's second from right

* A few books and sources list late TOS stunt player, Dick Dial, as Sam in the episode, but those are wrong.
Dick Dial had light blond hair and blue eyes and his only speaking part in TOS was as Kaplan in 'The Apple.'
He said "Yes, sir." in his only lines ever in TOS. Kaplan, if you remember, was totally fried by lightning in the episode.
You can clearly see he s NOT Sam if you compare the two guys.

Another thing to remember about TV stunt people in the 60s. There was some union ruling that they could not be working for two studios at once, and some stunt guys did several jobs in the one day, so often used several aliases on official call sheets.
