Robert Downey Jr. is "Sherlock Holmes"

Is this fantasy? I think it is. Robert Downey Jr. has been cast in Guy Richie's revitalization of Sherlock Holmes for Warner Bros.

Richie's drama -- which takes elements from the classic novel series as well as the comic books -- is set to begin filming before a competing project of the same name, this one set up at Columbia Pictures, starring Sacha Baron Cohen as the titular character and Will Ferrell as Watson.

Whereas Richie's film is leaned more towards the drama/action adventure spectrum of things, the Cohen/Ferrell film is definitely a comedy.

No word on a start or release date.

It seems that Iron Man has rejuvenated Downey's career. With the blockbuster success Iron Man under his belt, he's signed onto Cowboys & Aliens for 2010 and now of course Sherlock Holmes. Not to mention the planned Iron Man follow-up also aimed for summer 2010.

Will Downey become the new "go-to" action/blockbuster star?

Anyway, I've always loved the Holmes stories. Hope it turns out well.

The comedy one, though, well, it could be good, but seeing who is in it, it'll probably be centered on fart and penis jokes.
 
They've got their work cut out for them. Brett and Livanov have both played outstanding Holmes and those are the two that this recent endeavor will be compared to.

So Iron Man becomes Sherlock Holmes and rumors are Batman is in the running for Robin Hood. Both actors moving from American popular fiction into British popular fiction.

The day after the Bale rumour showed up, this one showed up too

Sam Riley is being lined up to play Robin Hood in Ridley Scott's Nottingham.

According to Latino Review, the film's star Russell Crowe was impressed with Riley's performance in the Ian Curtis biopic Control and wants to cast him as the infamous outlaw.

Guy Richie's Sherlock Holmes? What, is Holmes going to carry .45s, and Watson be a bruiser who beats the hell out of people?
 
I'm not familiar with the comic books in question. Is anyone? I'd be interested to know what is sufficiently different from the novels (if I had a guess, it would be scope; Doyle's stories tend to be little crime stories with about the same cast size as an episode of Law & Order).

As for the comedic version, so long as its funny (and the actors are two talented comedians), I wouldn't object; Holmes has been such a long-lasting character because he supports diverse interpretations.

Agreed. I know Brett is the measure I compare most Holmes actors to. I have faith in Downey's abilities, but it's more the directing and the script that are going to decide 'what kind' of Holmes he's going to play.
 
I hope Hollywood doesn't think Downey is the go-to guy on heroes with addiction issues, just because he had his own in the past. First Tony Stark, who's an alcoholic, and now Holmes, who frequently injected a seven-per-cent solution of cocaine.
 
I think it's at a point where he fits the part enough to be believable to an audience. Holmes is a bit more of a stretch than Tony Stark, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for this one.

Well seen as this one is going to be at least partially based on a comic book version, and the other one stars 2 people who don't know when to end a joke, I think I agree with you.

Not that I often prejudge movies... but both of these are going to need to look amazing before my opinion shifts from the above too.

I'm not that well versed on Holmes so that is interesting to me.
Now I may be wrong but cocaine didn't have the stigma in Homes setting as it does today, right? So I would hope then if its an element Guy Ritchie uses that he doesn't play it up as a bad taboo.

Wow, what a looming train wreck. :bolian:

Sherlock Holmes isn't a story that anyone needs to adapt anymore. Just get the episodes with Jeremy Brett on DVD.
