Michelle Forbes didn't want to be tied down to a series as a regular, so they hired Nana Visitor to Play a character named Kira Nerys instead.
The TNG staff had problems getting Forbes back after "Rascals" for "Preemptive Strike" (according to the TNG Companion) so I'm not surprised the character never returned.
Well, my namesake was only there a single season. To bad our namesakes did not get on a runabout and had a privite party of two
Clearly, Michelle Forbes didn't like having a steady paycheck. The benefit from changing the character from Ro to Kira was that Sisko's XO was wearing a different uniform with different allegiances, which made for a better dynamic than two people ostensibly from the same side. Plus Nana Visitor was awesome.

I'm pretty sure that her most prominent job right after TNG was Homicide: Life on the Street.
So very true.
Though it would have been interesting to see her guest star in a Maquis-based episode.
Forbes had an important role in Battlestar Galactica.
Incidentally, Colm Meany also didn't want to be tied down to a series as a regular. It took Berman promising Meany he could leave the series any time he wanted to go off and do a film.
