River's Journal--Chronicling Her Adventures With The Doctor

How would River have pictures of Doctors 1 to 9? She never met any of them. Did the Doctor give them to her in the future (i.e. his personal future)?
Maybe she did them from photos or paintings in the TARDIS. (I remember an old episode of the main comic strip in Doctor Who Monthly where Peri is rummaging through some stuff and comes across a painting of the Doctor by Van Gogh or Rembrandt; possibly one painting by each). Alternatively, she just gets the images from the TARDIS log and works from there. (The Trial Of A Time Lord indicates that the TARDIS has a visual record of the Doctor's adventures. There was even an adventure from the Doctor's near future, although I think that he got it from the Matrix or something. )
I like to think that the TARDIS has a gallery of priceless original paintings, though.

The Tenth Doctor didn't recognise her in Silence in the Library.
She retroactively met them later.

Not possible, seeing as she died at the end of that story.

I am kind of curious as to how none of the Doctors prior to Eleven noticed the box with her message in the museum, as he appears to have been visiting it for quite some time.
The TARDIS in its infinite wisdom arranged it that way, perhaps; avoiding that part of the museum previously because it was no fun for the Doctor to go on this adventure before he could be annoyed by it. ;)

I'm curious about the "Old High Gallifreyan" bit. It's possible the Doctor taught her somehow in the future (As the Doctor is one of those who understands it from "The Five Doctors".). Or there's more to River than there appears to be. Some have compared her to Romana, interestingly enough....
Interestingly, OHG appears to be exempt from TARDIS translation.

^ It was the same in The Five Doctors; the Doctors had to work to translate the inscription in the Tomb of Rassilon.

The weird sad thing is that the Doctor has already seen River Song die the first time she meets him.

I suppose that depends on your definition of death because everything she was was stored inside the computer in the same way that all the patrons of the library and Donna were. So technically, she is alive as long as the computer remains online.

That or she's just one big con merchant and never/has never actually had any kind of relationship with The Doctor.

So do you think she could be...
Iris Wildthyme
? ;)

I find that more likely than actually having the Doctor die a 'final death'. We all know that won't happen. Even if 12 regenerations is a normal limit for Timelords, that won't apply to the Doctor. He'll cheat his way out of it. They'll have the Doctor live forever.

I've been thinking about this for the last week or so and as much as I like Doctor Who I think I would want to see a final end to The Doctor. Seriously, it's conceivable that by the time the very final season airs the show will be in it's early 60's which is one hell of a run for any TV show, science fiction or not.

Besides, if there is to be a very final season then it could be something very special. Especially if that final season revolves around his relationship with River Song.

That meets my definition of "death" just fine, thanks. A replica is a replica is a replica.

Maybe River Song's Jenny, and that's why Moffat especially asked for her to be kept alive.

On the subject of how well she knows the Doctor: if she spends so much time dithering about what stage of knowing her he's at in Forest ("crash of the Byzantium - have we done that?"), then she can't know him that well. If she was his wife (ugh) or that close to him, then she'd know right away that the Ten was before Eleven. I think she's a con.

To gain what though? She knows a language she shouldn't be able to know, she has a diary of adventures with him (that seem to be real, since this adventure would in fact be the aforementioned Crash of the Byzantium), she sacrificed herself for him and genuinely seems to care about him. She knows how to steer his ship and he apparently fixed up his old screwdriver at some point and gave it to her. If she is a con she has gone through a lot of effort for seemingly very little gain.

Well imagine what an ordinary relationship is like...when did we go to London? Where was our fourth date, was it the cinema or the Frech Bistro? Did I meet your parents before mine?...then factor in that your partner has had multiple personalities/looks, and that your second date happened before your fourth (for one of you) etc etc...Christ sometimes having a linear relationship with one person gets confusing, imagine how screwed up River and the Doctor must be!

I hope we see River more, if only because it will be interesting to see the dynamic change. When she met Ten she was clearly in the ascendency because she knew him as well as she was ever going to know him because it was the end of the relationship, he on the other hand was the real underdog because it was the first time he'd met her. Already the relationship seems to be shifting, Eleven and River seem on slightly more equal footing (only slightly).

It's possible she is a con woman, but if she is then she's an incredibly clever one--she knows his real name, that's not something that's likely to be written down anywhere, he must have told her. Actually I can see Moffat pulling the trick that what started as a con becomes something more and in the end they both love each other anyway; so what comes first the romance or the con?

Well, it was the first time HE meets HER. ;)

That's perverse. I'd rather he didn't bang his daughter (at least on the show. The actors can do what they like.)

Still, I am very curious to see the first time SHE meets HIM.

He'll likely really enjoy having the tables turned. I bet he'd really mess with her, and ikely show off a lot.
