It's...

THE BISHOP!

(cue theme music and 1967 GTO convertable)

(notices that no one at all is following...)

(backs away quietly)

I only vaguely remember the episode but the general-bishop (or whatever he's called) already knows what she's done and how shocking it is yet he doesn't seem very familiar with the Doctor?

Am I remembering that right?
He seemed kind of in awe to meet the Doctor when River introduced them. Kept calling him "Sir". So he's at least heard of him.

Father Octavian was in fact somewhat familiar with the Doctor. He seemed to recognize the name the Doctor when River introduced the two ro each other. He asked River if the Doctor knew who she was and when she said no, Octavian warned that he likely wouldn't help if he knew. And he later made a comment to the Doctor about "when you fly away in your blue box" despite not having seen the TARDIS in the episode.

The TARDIS was on the same beach where the soldiers set up their base camp though surely.

I seem to recall as well Father Octavian asking River if the Doctor was really as clever as she said he was.

I doubt they can carry on this River Song business for much longer. Kingston's not getting any younger, and she already looks older than in Library/Forest. It was an interesting idea in theory, but she's such a smug and unlikeable character that I'd rather they just end it. I really don't care.

I don't think she looks that appreciably older than in her first appearance, but I'd agree it isn't something they can carry on with indefinitely, although as a character she has grown on me.

I do wonder why Kingston was cast in the role. It's nothing to do with her acting, but if I was casting someone who was going to make constant appearances supposedly set at different points in her life over some years on the show, I'd have probably gone for an actress in her earlyish 30s. But what do I know.

^I honestly doubt Moffat intended to bring her back. Maybe I'm wrong, and that was his plan all along. But, I'd bet that RTD and Gang (who would have cast her, btw, not The Moff's People) just picked her because she's a slightly elevated actress in terms on being known around the world for E.R. Remember, Russel's gimmick was always to take the P.T. Barnum approach to these kind of things. It was either going to be a known actress or probably a pop star or someone. Luckily, they got someone who can act.

As for her aging, I thought she looked younger and better in the finale than the Angel two-parter (which was the first one she filmed). So, hopefully, since she will be so involved for next year, I'm thinking she will have time to 'get in shape' and be the younger River. We'll see...

I thought she was Moffat's choice? Besides Moffat is in charge now so given he's brought her back you have to assume it was always a possibility, he could have left it alone and we'd just have assumed all the River adventures happened off camera!

Or, even better, didn't happen at all. A possible future that did entirely happen. Moffat's always writing in timey-wimey and time can be rewritten and all that. The last River Song story could do a bit of that.
