River as the companion?

I can see Karen leaving at the end of this season so thats would pretty much see the Rory character go too. If River could replace them that would be cool though they still would probably need a new female lead still to replace Amy.

I'd rather the "Doctor and River" years be kept as just an unseen thing myself. River is perfectly fine in small doses, but having to watch an entire season of those two flirting and being cutesy with each other just does not sound like fun. lol

^ I really doubt they would continue their dynamic like that if she was a permanent companion. That just seems like she's teasing the Doctor because of her sporadic appearances.

I would prefer not to have River as a full-time companion, especially in a scenario where Amy & Rory were no longer there, since you'd lose that wonder that the companion usually has when they're traveling around in the TARDIS with the Doctor. With River, it's pretty routine.

I suggested this as a joke as a comment on a friend's LJ yesterday, but the more I think about it, the more I think this would make a good Team TARDIS -- the eleventh Doctor, River, and Canton. You'd have your sensawunder character in Canton, and the Doctor and River would be, well, the Doctor and River. :)

Came across this earlier today, a chart of River and the Doctors timelines

That doesn't work though, since Impossible Astronaut River has to be post Big Bang, as she knows Rory, but didn't know him in Big Bang.

Moffat apparently tweeted that she knew Rory, she just just didn't reveal it because she can't reveal someone's future without damaging the timeline or something like that.

^ I guess this is the reason why she seemed non-challant about Amy too last series, and Donna from series four. She'd already knew them.

I'll repeat and say that if River was made a permanent companion she would be toned down considerably. I think she'd be more like we saw her in Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I think River, much like Jack is better in small doses. That doesn't mean I don't like her, but history shows that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing (Spike was far more fun as an occasional character in Buffy and then as a main cast member in a large ensemble, than he was as a main focus in Angel--by contrast I think DS9 played it just right with Garak.)

I should clarify that I too think that I wouldn't like to see her be made a permanent companion myself. I think there is much more excitement and she keeps her mystery when she's used in small doses. I was just saying that I think that is what Moffat would do if she was used as an ongoing companion.

I'll expand my River centric novel suggestion and say I'd love to see a River Song novel series.

Which tells me there's a LOT more to Donna's story, and more to come. River was in absolute awe of her, like she was meeting the most important person (next to the Doctor) in all of history.

I read it more that she knew Donna had her memory wiped and was sort of pitting her. It was more of a gawking type thing than a hero type thing.

Weellllll ... read it again. River was in awe of Donna. Total hero worship.

^ I tend to agree with this to a degree. I think River was aware of Donna's destined greatness once she found out who she was and was like oh shit I'm just before this happens! She knew how much the Doctor cared about her.
