So has heard if they plan to keep the series in the present (or near future or whenever it takes place) or will they jump forward to time of the original movie eventually?

I have not heard or read anything definitive yet, but were I to hazard a guess, I'd say that since seems to clearly indicate a different timeline that that depicted in PotA 1968, I'd say that they may stick with a contemporary setting, at least for a few films. This would allow for the development of continuity and for us to see the next stage of the shifting of power.

If the next movie started say, 10 months after the events of this one, the virus would well be on its way to wiping out a large portion of humanity, allowing the apes a chance to begin an all-out war against the remaining survivors. A third film then, might deal with the return of the Icarus, but perhaps only 100 years into the future, as opposed to nearly 2,000.

I'm just speculating here. Being that this is clearly NOT the Icarus of the original, then there's nothing to hold them to having it return in the far-distant future.

I'm going to have to wait until next Sunday to see this.My brother is taking me to see this for my birthday. So I can't wait!

Yeah, I imagine we'll pick up in the very near-future, with the apes rising as humanity is dying. But that leaves plenty of fights between the dying humanity and the apes.

Not that I'm suggesting that they should actually adapt any of this material, but some of the original stories told in the old monthly Marvel PotA comic-mag (from the 70s) would be great inspiration for close conflicts between the survivors and Caesar's group.

Still, if the planet really is going to end up in their hands (paws, whatever) then you have to wonder if somehow, apes around the world find a way to connect with their already-intelligent brethren. If the virus is airborne...

I'm just sayin'.

This film was just superb. I especially loved the moments where you can see the human-like intelligence dawning in Caesar's eyes. It was epic.

But you know, I've been looking around the Internet, and I've discovered that right-wingers really fucking hate this movie. No really. Many are actually offended by it. Holy shit.

Why do they hate it?

A few reasons:
-anything with apes is a no go, because apes symbolize the perils of evolution for some reason, and we all know how they feel about that little theory. And the movie's tagline "evolution becomes revolution" doesn't help.
-many have this natural aversion to any story that challenges humanity's "God-given" dominion of the earth. This includes our right to experiment on animals and our right to kill everything that challenges us - whatever the cost.
-some assholes are actually making jokes about Caesar symbolizing Obama. I kid you not.

Where the hell is this bullshit coming from? I'm a right winger and I just saw this movie a second time. I think it's great.

Exactly. I'm a "right-winger" as well and I loved this film. What's more, every conservative site I've visited this week has had nothing but good things to say about this film as well.:wtf:

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is off to a good start, grossing almost $20 million on Friday.

That is a decent start. I hope that it's box-office take doesn't drop off quickly. I know it's not going to do Harry Potter level of dollars, but enough to warrant the continuation of a new series.

The SF premise that a virus delivering a few genes is going to do that to the brain is a whopper if you know biology. Either you can or you can't, and happily I can. What I can't swallow is a virus making you immune to being cut to shreds by plate glass windows and doors when you smash through them. The GenSys attack in particular is ridiculous. Nor does a brain improving virus make you survive a forty foot fall without injury.

I think Franco actually does a pretty good mad scientist when he's in scenes that don't hinge on the other people somehow not noticing that, nice guy or not, he's out of his mind! You do not experiment on human beings, even to save your father, unless you are pretty much totally indifferent to law, employer and reputation. This works when it's just Franco, Lithgow and Serkis.

But when the animal vet somehow doesn't notice for five years that Caesar isn't an ordinary chimpanzee, willing suspension of disbelief get whacked upside the head. "Steven Jacobs'" not noticing that a man like that is not the best judge is bad enough, but when he suddenly gets even more reckless it's really hard to swallow. And the vet not telling anyone about being exposed means he didn't realize Rodman was messing around with much of anything!

There was a nice post upthread explaining how it's all Franco's fault which highlighted how pointless most of the plot elements with GenSys and the ALZ-113 were.

Nonetheless, I gave the movie A+ for the good reason that it was about Caesar discovering a new world. That's is a common but still powerful theme in SF, one that fantasy and realist fiction cannot address very easily. I suppose there are people who don't get why the music swelled when Caesar first climbed the tree and why Caesar climbing it again is the climax, but those were powerful moments. An action movie that delivers powerful moments is far more engaging in one that just goes bang.

The love interest in this movie had to be the most useless one in recent memory. She literally served no purpose to the plot other than being Franco's love interest. It's not the actresses' fault. She did what she could with an utterly thankless and undeveloped role.

Sure, but I've seen much crazier concepts in sci-fi movies. It's not something that's beyond suspension of disbelief.

I agree with you that those were exceptionally powerful moments, especially the end with him looking back out over where he had come from. It was in fact, just about a perfect ending scene, IMO. It really fit nicely with the fact that the movie was essentially about him and discovering his destiny (I hope that doesn't sound too cliche).

:techman:

These are about the only criticisms i have about an otherwise amazing and well done movie. They needed these to further the plot or at times outright ignored logic and reason for cool moments but i quickly recovered and moved on.

Well.. she wasn't central to the movie but a nice addition. Somehow whenever a male and female interact in a movie now no matter the genre and there's attraction it has become standard to develop a romantic plot for no other reason than to have romane and devote at least a quarter of the movie to it be it important or not. In this case their relationship wasn't important to the plot and so they didn't mention it.. they just showed that they were together and apparently happy and that's all they needed to show. I'm glad they didn't try to appeal to the female audience by wedging in some "touchy feely" stuff.

It was an excellent movie.. far better than i have hoped. The original movie is not that remarkable save for the twist ending that made it famous and has become mainstream knowledge.

This was way way better in my opinion and not due to the effects. It was just better written and better developed and is a very good basis to build upon for further movies (of which i'm sure there will be.. at least one).

Well, the original's screenplay was written by Rod Serling. Can't do much better than that. It was wickedly clever in its day. Yes it was reflective of its time (the political unrest of the late 1960s) but so is this new one.

I wonder if there would be more negative on fundamental religious sites, rather than simply conservative. I don't know. I haven't checked. But I can see that being more of a problem with those groups. Just wondering.
