That's a good possibility, JD; given the nearly 2000 years separating this story in our present with the world Taylor finds in the original, there's a lot of room to make a linear series that would explore how the world evolves into one where the apes dress, talk and we humans have become mere animals.
I hope this does well, because I want to see a whole bunch of new movies working on the above premise!

Not really, or at least, not that I can recall. I think the references in this movie are just for harmless fun, an acknowledgement of the source material, without really getting into the existence of any of those other films - save for the original, I think. For example, 'Bright Eyes' is the name that Zira gave Taylor in the original. The quotes of course, also hark back to that film. Other than Caesar's name, I can find no direct reference to any of the four sequels (and I don't even count the abomination that Burton made!)
Well there are others mentioned in the review, they're really minor things, but just so I don't piss anybody off I'll use spoiler codes.
They said there is a scene with a kid playing with a broken Statue of Liberty toy, and someone says "It's a madhouse" and "Get you're hands off me you damn dirty ape".
I saw it today. Wow. It didn't disappoint at all. The apes looked awesome. Up there with X-Men First Class and Captain America, as my favourite films so far this year.
The producers probably convinced the studio it was a mindless action film.
I am really psyched for this. I'm glad to hear this from a fellow fan, in addition to the good reviews I've read so far.
Did you stay for the scene stuck inside the end credits?
I tried to keep my expectations down, but now all these good reviews are getting them up! Hope to see it this weekend, might even get the wife to come along!

As an animal lover I can happily report that this has received PETA's Proggy Award for Most Animal Friendly Feature film.
