To answer a question posed upthread. When interviewed (I think in Gerrold's "The World of Star Trek") Campbell related that it was Gene Coon who pushed to have him play Trelane. Joseph D'Agosta, the Trek casting director, said Campbell was too known as a "heavy"/not good enough to pull off the sympathetic final scenes, but Coon was adamant and Campbell was cast.

I thought he was great in DS9. He took the same character with the same personality and gave him a sense of great nobility.

That sounds about right. Campbell and his wife used to play bridge with Coon and his wife frequently.

So, it probably went from Roddenberry wanting someone different, "not Liberace", Coon thought of his good buddy Bill Campbell, and the tag team was on.

Like they always say, there's nothing like a good pair of Genes. :D

Very sorry to hear of this. RIP, William Campbell. And thank you again for all that you gave to the Star Trek legacy. Your best character was Trelane, a brilliant performance I always smile at. Take care...

According to Campbell, there was some talk of trying to get Roddy McDowall to play Trelane, but they decided against it . . . .

Judith Exner, who claimed to be associated with both JFK and the Mob, was Campbell's first wife. Small world, isn't it?

When I read that I thought: now that would have been interesting. Could possibly have worked. But doesn't change fact that Campbell is Trelane...

Indeed. 2011 has lost us a few already.

I just watched DS9's Blood Oath last week for the first time and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, a few days later William Campbell was gone.

Aye, Josan... I watched Seeds of Doom where part of the production commentary talked about how originally Sarah Jane was going to be written out through means of...well, killing her off. Also was mentioned about how she was giving advice to Louise Jameson on how to deal with Tom. Carefully, I imagine was the answer;)

Plus, they also mentioned how they had planned on having the Brigadier come back for that story, too. It was a double reminder in that one!
