RIP Sandy the cat (1994-2009)

I did my undergraduate degree at my home city's university, so I remained at home, but now that I'm in Ottawa working on my MA, one of the things that I thought about on departure was whether the household pets, the family cat Sandy and my dog Marco, both somewhat on in years, would die while I was away. Sadly, one of those things came to pass this week. Sandy was randomly set upon by some stray German Shepherd dog, who mauled his leg, the result being that he had to be put down today.:(

15 1/2 years is a good run for any cat, and he lived them pretty much free of health problems (particularly unusual given his obesity), but it's sad it had to end this way. I always hoped he'd go peacefully one night in his favourite chair; instead, he spent his last few days laying around unable to move while we decided whether there was any realistic chance of helping him. The whole thing really upset the dog, too, apparently; not surprising, since they've been a double-act for 13 years.

Anyway, bye, buddy. A memory of happier times:

He never did like getting his picture taken.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your friend. Marco will indeed be confused and upset; Pets find it very hard to understand when their friends get sick or go away.

RIP, Sandy. :(

I just got a baby kitty and it's amazing how attached you get to them. My condolences buddy.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know what its like to lose a cat that's been with you a long time... like a part of your life has been ripped away. Like losing a family member, really. My sincerest condolences, especially given the violent nature of his end. He deserved better than that.

He looks like he was a big guy, too. Must've been very cuddly. Reading threads like these makes me appreciate my own two cats, Lewis & Clark, all the more. Especially now that they're past middle age.

Really sorry for your loss. I had a cat that died at around the same age. He was with me all through my teens and well into my twenties. It was tough to have to put him down. My condolences.

He looks like he was a big guy, too.
He hovered around 25 pounds for most of his life. He never actually ate all that much, so early on we wondered whether one of our neighbours was feeding him too, but in the end it was just his metabolism. The family developed a vast array of weight-related nicknames for him.

I am so sorry for your loss and that Sandy's last few days were so difficult. I am sure he felt safe and secure being surrounded by his loved ones though. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

I'm sorry for your loss, man. I know it's too painful for you to put him to sleep, he was part of your life so long time now. Right now my cat is in ripe age of nine and will be ten very soon, he's very precious in any shape that you can expected him to be that way.

My deepest condolences to you and your family who loves this cat very, very, very much. I vowed that I will never be put through like that ever again, but instead, my cat will be going on the journey to be frozen in the afterlife. So one day, we will be reunited. He deserved to have another chance in another life with me.

Smile, mate, your cat is in the eternal place where he's free to roaming around, I'm sure some family members of yours is watching him over now in the spirit world. I'm trying not to shed my tears, but of that death gets to me so heavily, it bought so many memories that I've had with my eldest cat, his name was TT. He's had feet cancer and my estranged mother herself decided to putting him to sleep before I could got my chance to said good-bye to him. It was too cruel for her to put him away before I bid him farewell.

Today, I got two new cats are almost ready to enters in my life coming next year where we'll be moving to my new apartment, it will be tough to getting along with my eldest cat who's very exciting to be playful with them for long time to come. I will have many pictures to show to you, proving that cats do have special gift in our hearts. Hang in there, my friend. Once again, my deepest condolences.

I'm also really sorry to hear about your cat, CaptainCanada. From the picture, he looked adorable and cuddly.

:(
