Veteran Actor Robert Loggia Dies at 85

The New York native earned an Oscar nomination for playing a detective in the 1985 film 'Jagged Edge.'

Robert Loggia, the veteran actor whose portrayal of a crusty detective in the 1985 Joe Eszterhas film Jagged Edge earned him an Academy Award nomination, died Friday at his home in Los Angeles, TMZ reported. He was 85.

His wife of 33 years, Audrey, said that he had been battling Alzheimer's for the past five years.

Most recognizable for playing tough-talking heavies in film and TV, the actor sported other major film credits including An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Scarface (1983), Prizzi’s Honor (1985) and Big (1988).

He also played surly toughs with a tongue-in-cheek panache. Loggia had a recurring role in three of Blake Edwards’ Pink Panther escapades. In a similar vein, he played Sallie (The Shark) Macelli, a gangster turned vampire in the dark comedy Innocent Blood (1992).

He appeared in many TV movies, include a stint as Anwar Sadat in A Woman Called Golda (1982) with Ingrid Bergman.

I always loved his performance as the restaurant owner on Frasier.

RIP.

Roggie?

I recently posted his name in the movie game an thought, I'm so glad he's still alive. First thought that comes to mind is the "Big" piano scene. Classic.

Believe it or not, his name was in the running for the lead on Star Trek.

He ended up starring on T.H.E. Cat on NBC instead.

RIP.

Isn't there a user on TrekBBS with that name? I did a search but can't find them. RIP Mr Loggia, you will be missed.

I remember Robert Loggia from the old Disneyland TV series, Elfuego Baca. He wwas great in the role as he was in so many>

RIP

That's very sad to hear. I loved his turn as the General in Independence Day. Plus if you look around 70s TV shows he was up there with Richard Lynch, John Saxon, John Vernon, Leslie Nielson and Lloyd Bochner as someone who always seemed to show up as a heavy on TV. I've seen him in multiple episodes of Starsky & Hutch, $6 Million Dollar Man, S.W.A.T., Kojak, Wonder Woman and Bionic Woman. R.I.P. :-(.

That was well before my time but I swear I saw it; I wonder if it was re-run in the '70s?

Anyway, so many great Loggia roles it's hard to narrow down. He went from a dependable TV heavy in the '70s (I especially remember him from the first episode of Magnum P.I.) to popping up all over in movies in the '80s, and on to other stuff as varied as The Sopranos and Tom Goes to the Mayor. He was always working and always brought some quality to a role; I'm sorry to think I won't seem him in anything new. RIP.
