Oscar-winning British film director Richard Attenborough has died at the age of 90, his son has said.
Lord Attenborough was one of Britain's leading actors, before becoming a highly successful director.
In a career that spanned six decades, he appeared in films including Brighton Rock, World War Two prisoner of war thriller The Great Escape and later in dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic Park.
As a director he was perhaps best known for Gandhi, which won him two Oscars.
Lord Attenborough had been in a nursing home with his wife for a number of years, BBC arts editor Will Gompertz said.
He had also been in a wheelchair since falling down stairs six years ago, our correspondent added.
Hi son told the BBC Lord Attenborough died at lunchtime on Sunday.
His family is expected to make a full statement tomorrow.

Thank you for your efforts, sir.

90 years old---good show, sir.

A wonderful director, actor, producer and all-around good guy.

Here's to a life well-lived.

I though that he was excellent, but creepy, in 10 Rillington Place. I also liked him in The Flight of the Phoenix which had the added benefit of having Jimmy Stewart in the cast.

I did attempt to read his autobiography Entirely Up to You, Darling but gave up around 120 pages in. The problem with the book 1) in was non-linear and 2) he wrote it with his publicist/script editor/co-producer, Diana Hawkins, and frankly her life story didn't interest me. I didn't totally give up on the book, instead I looked up his family members, movies etc in the index and just read parts of the book including the very sad story of how he lost his daughter and grand-daughter in the 2004 tsunami.

The characters you indwelt with such life were brilliant, Lord Attenborough, and you will be missed. Rest in peace, good sir. :(

It seems that many people on social media, especially on Twitter, have confused the Attenborough brothers and are paying tribute to Sir David instead. Even one newspaper got it wrong and

"tweeted a picture of a moose "selfie" in honour of the late Attenborough, saying on Twitter: "RIP Sir Richard Attenborough. In honour we present these 'Wildlife selfies' from Parks Canada".

The two brothers' careers were quite different and I am suprised that people could confuse them.
