Emmy-winning actor Patrick McGoohan, best known for starring in cult 1960s TV show The Prisoner, has died at the age of 80.

He died in Los Angeles after a short illness, his film producer son-in-law Cleve Landsberg said.

McGoohan played the character Six in the surreal 1960s show, filmed in the north Wales village of Portmeirion. He won two Emmy awards for his work on TV detective series Columbo, playing different characters.

Sad news. Lately I've been watching The Prisoner for the first time and marveling at his sheer skill and presence.

To me, he was absolutely one of the all-time greats.

Now we'll NEVER find out why he quit! :(

Very sad news...great show. Pity the movie has taken so long...he might've made an interesting Number Two.

A free man, in life and death.

Sorry to hear of this. He was a truly unique actor and screen presence, too rarely seen on the screen for my liking. As enigmatic in person, it seems, as the tv series that both made his reputation and haunted his career.

RIP No. 6.

Crap. And right on the eve of the remake of The Prisoner. Hope it carries a dedication to the man.

RIP, Number 6.

“He has revolted. Resisted. Fought. Held fast. Maintained. Destroyed resistance. Overcome coercion. The right to be a person, someone or individual. We applaud his private war, and concede that despite materialistic efforts, he has survived intact and secure!”

Be seeing you, Patrick. :(
