John Mortimer - wit, raconteur and creator of Rumpole of the Bailey died in his sleep at 85. I hope he and Rumpole - Leo McKern - are toasting each other with a bottle of Château Thames Embankment.

In addition to the Rumpole short stories (and the TV series made from them,) Mortimer also wrote fine mysteries like Summer's Lease and Felix in the Underworld.
But perhaps over time his Titmuss trilogy, Paradise Postponed, Titmuss Regained and The Sound of Trumpets will stand the test of time best.
Truly a great loss.

Aw, man. I never read the books, but I liked watching Rumpole on T.V. with my mom. RIP.
