American guitarist Ronnie Montrose, best known for the band which bears his surname, has died aged 64.
The debut album by Montrose, which has vocals by future Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, is rightly regarded as one of the great hard rock debut albums, comparable with Van Halen's own, but pre-dating it by 5 years (VH even borrowed its producer, Ted Templeman). Sadly, it failed to achieve commercial success and the band broke up after a few more albums, which failed to match the acclaim of their eponymous debut. The band also featured Denny Carmassi, who would later play with Heart and Coverdale/ Page.
Montrose had previously played with Van Morrison and Edgar Winter and following the break-up of his titular band continued to make music. In recent years, he and the rest of the original Montrose line-up (bassist Bill Church was the fourth member) had reunited to record and play together.
Ronnie sadly died from prostate cancer yesterday. RIP.
