RIP Eric Dane a.k.a. Dr. McSteamy

Rear Admiral

Eric Dane has died at the age of 53, PEOPLE confirms. Dane became a star with his role as Dr. Mark Sloan — a.k.a. McSteamy — in Grey’s Anatomy. Dane's death comes 10 months after he went public with his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Big fan of The Last Ship's first three seasons here. Fair winds and following seas, Captain Chandler.

Damn, that sucks. Loved him in Grey’s Anatomy, but kinda lost track of his career after that. I think the only other thing I saw him in was Euphoria.

May he rest in peace. :(

Unless they're allergic to rah-rah celebrations of the US military, which is understandable*, all Trek fans should give The Last Ship a try, IMO, as it's got lots of Trek vibes, and is arguably closer in tone to pre-Abrams Trek than the new stuff. Especially if they're already Eric Dane fans.

* And even then, the show features plenty of American civilians, military and politicians as villains, and features an admirably diverse cast, so it's hardly a right-wing fever dream. That said, the final season does unfortunately kill off many of the POC characters while leaving nearly all the (remaining) white guys standing for some reason, so one can skip the 4th and 5th seasons if one likes.

Very sad to hear. When he made his ALS diagnosis public last year, I kind of figured things were already pretty serious (well, besides the fact that ALS is itself very serious). Typically actors or other public figures don't reveal something like that unless it's gotten to the point where it can't be hidden anymore.

He'll always be Captain Tom Chandler to me. The Last Ship was a great show, and though it had its share of flaws, it could always be counted on to deliver solid entertainment. One of the show's strengths which did stay consistent throughout its entire run was its excellent cast, and as lead actor Eric Dane superb as lead actor and in the role of Tom Chandler.

RIP

I only knew him from The Last Ship.

My college roommate died of ALS in his 30's. A terrible disease.

RIP
