RIP Denny Martin Flinn

I put this in ST novels, but realized some people from here would never go there.

It has been announced that "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" scribe, Denny Martin Flinn, died of complications from cancer on 24 August 2007, according to "Broadway World". He was 59 years old. His Star Trek novel for Pocket Books was "The Fearful Summons".

:(

I liked his work on Star Trek VI, though his Trek book wasn't that interesting. Should have written it with Nick Meyer.

Did write a good book on bad screenwriting, though. I've still got a copy on my shelf somewhere.

I hope he rests in peace.

I recall interviews he made back in 1991 for Star Trek VI on screenwriting. How he equated a mythic quality to the characters of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. How they were right up there with the greats like Sherlock Holmes and other literary creations. Sure enough, most everyone involved in Trek tends to go overboard for these press/publicity bits but he certainly had a point and I feel sure he would've approved of J.J. Abrams' approach for the new film.

The Saturn Award he shared with Nick Meyer was well deserved and The Undiscovered Country holds a special place in my memory of Star Trek. Seeing it on the big screen with some friends. Happy Days. Thank you, Mr Flinn.

RIP.

I agree with Hirogen Alpha, his "How NOT To Write A Screenplay" is one of the few worthwhile books on that craft.

WOW...just was listening to the Undiscovered Country audio commetnary the other day and this comes as shocking news. I didn't know he was suffering from cancer. I read "Fearful Symmerty" didn't like it that much but it was alright. I'll have to check out that book as well.

It was "The Fearful Summons" it was one of the first Trek books I ever bought. I enjoyed well enough, still pull it out on occaision. I have his book on screenwriting on my shelf, funny thing is that I was reading it around the time that he died.

He was suffering from cancer for years. He was given the assignment to help write Trek 6 to help take his mind off the chemo, at least that's what I read in interviews of the time. He bought an extra 15 years, which is fantastic for cancer.

Still, he was too damned young.
