RIP Boyd Kirkland (Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men: Evolution)

I just saw the sad news on the Toonzone forums that Boyd Kirkland, one of the best producers and directors working in TV animation, died several days ago at the age of 60 while awaiting a lung transplant.

He was best known for his work on Batman: The Animated Series (of which he directed 21 episodes) and X-Men: Evolution. He also directed Batman & Mr Freeze: SubZero and was a sequence director on Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

My condolences to his loved ones. :(

Oh, no, that's awful. He was a superb director with a real knack for character animation. And 60 is way too young.

I chatted with him once on the Toonzone forums. He was okay. Damn fine director. He directed one of my favorite TAS episodes It's Never Too Late. I always bawl when I watch that episode. Told him that. He seemed so surprised that theepisode got that kind of emotional reaction. Personally I'm surprised that he was surprised. That episode is a tearjerker.

He's been attached to some of my favourite shows for almost two decades. Very unfortunate news. And I agree: 60 is way too young.
