Riker should have been killed instead of Data in Nemesis

Would Nemesis had been a better movie if Riker were killed?

Why give Data yet another twin brother when Riker already had a twin brother and they could have had almost the same exact storyline except with Thomas Riker.

Shinzon could have found a way to kidnap Tom Riker and use him as bait to lore Picard to wherever he wanted. Then, in a turn of events, William Riker sacrifices his life to save Picard after Picard's confrontation with Shinzon leaving Tom Riker alive. Killing off Will Riker would have had a much bigger impact on the fanbase because even though Tom Riker would still be alive, there was no way that the real Will Riker we came to know could ever return. By killing off Data, it just feels like they could just hit a big reset button and bring back data using the excuse that B9 has his memories and Data might just one day emerge even though he may not approve of taking over his "brother's" body.

Anyway, just my 2 cents. not that it matters much now since it doesn't look like TNG-era Star Trek will ever return.

Data's more well liked, that's why they killed him off. I don't think the film would have been improved with killing Riker off, if they were ever going to kill him off in a plot involving Tom... that should have been done in "Second Chances" - they seriously considered killing Will and keeping Tom onboard, but nixed it.

The problem isn't that they killed Data, but that it didn't quite work dramatically.

Believe me, Data's death wasn't the only thing wrong with that movie.

THanks!! Never heard that before!!

People need to lighten up on Nemesis. It wasn't perfect but it was never designed to be. Like it for what it is...star trek.

The old "what it is" defense works both ways. We can dislike it for what it is, too. For example:

"People need to be realistic on Nemesis. It was mediocre at best, and we really deserve better than that. Dislike it for what it is...bad Star Trek."

Hopping back on the rails, I don't think killing Riker, Troi, or Crusher would have improved the movie. All of them were leaving the Enterprise anyway; killing them on their last adventure is too much like the "cop working his last case before retirement" cliche. They should've killed Picard. That would've left only two of the Big Seven on the E, and really brought home the end-of-TNG thing they half-heartedly attempted.

Well to kill Riker in Nemesis they would have to have made the rest of the next generation cast more than just background scenery, which they were in nemesis.

But data's not dead anyway as he transferred all his stuff into B4, its just taking B4 time to install it all.

That's what I was thinking. Having anyone other than Data die for Picard in Nemesis would have broken the cardinal rule of all Next Gen movies, which is that Picard and Data are the only characters who matter.

Also, killing off Riker just after his wedding day would be a special, Hollywood flavour of mean, and would have some fairly damning implications for the true meaning of interpersonal relationships for TNG (Don't do it! You'll get Remans, and die!) ;)

I didn't see the point of killing anyone off in Nemesis. It was their last adventure after all, there was no point.

It wasn't supposed to be their last adventure, though. (Remember the tagline on the posters? "A Generation's Final Journey Begins") There would have been a fifth TNG movie if Nemesis hadn't been such a tremendous disappointment.

^ Wouldn't that have been a problem though, with no Riker, no Troi and no Data aboard Enterprise? (and if you go by the deleted scenes, no Crusher either)
There'd only be 3 of 7 cast left on Enterprise. Half the film would just be spent buggering about getting them all back together again.

I guess Star Trek VI did something like that with Sulu off ship on the Excelsior, but that was only 1 of the cast of 7, not 4

Only Data would have been a problem, since the movies more or less made him and Picard the only necessary characters to the story.

Hardly a problem; I mean, they didn't bother getting anyone but Picard, Worf, and Data aboard for Nemesis either.

They'd find a way to get them all together, remember how they got Worf back in Insurrection with an incomplete sentence?

Picard: "Mr. Worf, what the hell are you doing here?"
Worf: "Well Captain, I was on Random Planet attending..."
<bleep>
Voice: "Bridge to Captain Picard"

Hmm...haven't heard that before, either! ;) :p

So we should have low-to-no standards just because someone labeled the film "Star Trek?" What if it did a bad job of being Star Trek?

Killing Commander Riker off would've been a nice nod to TOS's "Balance of Terror." But I wouldn't like seeing him get killed off...

No you shouldn't complain so much.

Picard should have died instead of Data.

Plain and simple. Give Riker the Enterprise, let Picard go.

Then if they do more movies, use CGI "de-aging" like in X-Men 3 for Spiner to play Data again.

Or even better: give Picard an end he really deserves, which I had an outline of years ago for my "Trek XI."
