Riker and the Prime Directive.

Ship's Computer

Ensign
Newbie
Why would anyone in their right mind allow Riker to show a "female" of any species around the Enterprise? We even had an androgenous species and still he formed a close relationship with one of them (gay tendancies perhaps?). If I was captain I'd not let Riker anywhere near a visiting female, in fact I'd have him put off the ship. I'm surprised with the writers of TNG that they allow such an obvious infraction of the Prime Directive to occur given that Riker keeps sleeping with any alien within a hundred lightyears. In fact, his behaviour is now so predictable in any episode invoving a female alien, it's tedious.

having sex with an alien isn't a PD violation. Voyager had that half-assed episode "the disease," which tried to make it seem like a thing, but after watching Kirk and Riker it seemed kind of absurd.

Is it established that the J'naii are pre-warp? I tend to think not.

In any event it seemed like the Federation had pre-existing relations with them, IIRC, so I don't see how there's a PD concern.

That said, mucking about with their internal affairs would be a no-no, but I don't believe that's inherently a PD matter.

It is quite normal for the second in command to receive visitors and give them a tour of facilities be it ship or base. And most naval officers especially up and comers are quite comfortable trying to bed as many women as possible.

What's not normal is a captain looking the other way when these passions start to affect the day to day business. It always bothered me that Picard never grilled Riker about keeping it in the bedroom.

Yeah, I think you're letting your dislike of the character effect your analysis of him. Doing the alien girl of the week isn't a Prime Directive violation and honestly, Picard's got enough going on without babysitting his crew. So long as it's not causing diplomatic incidents or distracting from his duties, why would Picard care what Riker does?

One word:

"Kirk"

The Prime Directive was mostly based around not interfering with the natural progression of a civilization, pre or post-warp.... getting it on with someone isn't really doing that.

Riker might have crossed the line a bit when he was disguised as an alien when the Federation was going to introduce themselves to the civilization that was about to use Warp Drive & gotten the crap beaten out of him..... and he had to get it on with that nurse so he could try and escape... but that's a bit of a grey area.

Operational necessity. :p

On Riker and the J'Nai (the "sex-less" "female) I think it's... crass to suggest Riker has homosexual tendencies because of (her) and the above post is merely worth only a:

With Soren Riker made a connection to a person. Someone who also identified themself as a "female." Yeah or favorite first officer sure tended to like his women buxom and traditionally beautiful but that he "fell" for Soren suggests that his tastes can run deeper, beyond the skin, and to the person.

Or maybe his standards started going down as he put on weight in the later seasons? ;)

Given the whole concept of the thread being Riker violating the Prime Directive by hooking up with various aliens of the week, I hope you're not taking my comments too seriously. :p
